Professional wrestling in Australia makes up a small part of Australian culture. Unlike the North American or Japanese products which have large, globally renowned organisations such as WWE, AEW, New Japan Pro-Wrestling or Impact Wrestling with several hundred smaller promotions, Australia only has approximately 30 smaller independent circuit promotions which exist in all but one of the states and territories, that being the Northern Territory. Tours from the North American product are regularly sold out in capital cities such as Melbourne, Sydney, Perth and Brisbane. History Professional wrestling in Australia first gained distinction in the early 1900s, however there were very few shows promoted. Tag team wrestling is a type of professional wrestling in which matches are contested between teams of multiple wrestlers. Tag teams may be made up of wrestlers who normally wrestle in singles competition, but more commonly are made of established teams who wrestle regularly as a unit and have a team name and identity. In most team matches, only one competitor per team is allowed in the ring at a time. This status as the active or legal wrestler may be transferred by physical contact, most commonly a palm-to-palm tag which resembles a high five. Championship reigns are determined by professional wrestling matches, in which competitors are involved in predetermined rivalries. These narratives create feuds between the various competitors, which cast them as villains and heroes. The bookers in a company will place the title on the most accomplished performer, or whom they believe will generate fan interest in terms of event attendance and television viewership. Alan Pinfold
Johnny Gilday (born 1929) is a retired weightlifter and professional wrestler and later on referee, best known under the ring name Allan Pinfold, sometimes spelled Alan Pinfold. He was an active wrestler from 1945 until 1975 when he retired and became a referee until 1985. During his 30-year career Pinfold won the Australian Light Heavyweight Championship three times in total and also won the Australian Tag Team Championship while teaming with Allan Sherry. Personal life Johnny Gilday was born in 1929 in Sydney, Australia where he also grew up. Growing up during the Great Depression in Australia the effects of poverty and bullying propelled him to join a gym and get physically fit as a bodybuilder. Later on he turned to wrestling instead to make money. All throughout his career Gilday held down a day job as well, working as an engineer. Tony Kontellis
Antonios "Tony" Kontellis (Greek: Αντώνιος Κοντέλλης; born 1935), is a former Greek-Australian professional wrestler. Kontellis has worked for many wrestling promotions throughout his career, including WCW Australia and WWWF for Vince McMahon Sr. Career Kontellis participated in the Greek team for the 1956 Olympics in Melbourne, Australia but a training injury forced him to withdraw. Travelling to South Australia to visit relatives, he was convinced to enter professional wrestling by a local wrestler. He was training in a gym when he was noticed by a visiting American wrestler, Lou Newman, who served as a mentor during Kontellis's early career. In 1957, Kontellis teamed with Norm Ryan to compete for the vacant Australian Tag Team Championship. Norm Ryan
Phillip Norman Ryan (24 May 1910 – 25 March 1997) was an Australian politician, affiliated with the Labor Party. He was elected as a member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly and served as Minister for Public Works from 1959–1965. Early life He was born at Moruya, on the south coast of New South Wales to Michael and Elizabeth Ryan. After attending St. Joseph's College, Hunters Hill and the Sydney Technical College, he was an apprentice electrical fitter for the Sydney County Council.
