Australian Football League
The Australian Football League (AFL) is the only fully professional competition of Australian rules football. Through the AFL Commission, the AFL also serves as the sport's governing body and is responsible for controlling the laws of the game. Originally known as the Victorian Football League (VFL), it was founded in 1896 as a breakaway competition from the Victorian Football Association (VFA), with its inaugural season commencing the following year. The VFL, aiming to become a national competition, began expanding beyond Victoria to other Australian states in the 1980s, and changed its name to the AFL in 1990. The league currently consists of 18 teams spread over five of Australia's six states (Tasmania being the exception). Matches have been played in all states, plus the Australian Capital Territory and the Northern Territory, as well as in New Zealand and China to expand the league's audience. Shane Crawford
Shane Barry Crawford (born 9 September 1974) is a former Australian rules football player, television media personality and author. He played 305 senior games for the Hawthorn Football Club in the Australian Football League (AFL) and won the Brownlow Medal in 1999. Crawford is currently the head coach with the Ardmona Cats. AFL career Crawford spent his childhood in Finley, New South Wales, and played his junior football with the Finley Football Club. He attended boarding school at Assumption College in Kilmore, Victoria and was selected by Hawthorn with the 13th pick in the 1991 AFL Draft. He made his debut in 1993. Crawford played 305 career AFL games. He is also a four-time All-Australian player and played in three International Rules series for Australia. Shaun Burgoyne
Shaun Playford Burgoyne (born 21 October 1982) is a former Australian rules footballer who played with the Port Adelaide Football Club in the SANFL, and Port Adelaide and Hawthorn Football Club in the Australian Football League (AFL). Burgoyne was the first Indigenous Australian player in elite Australian rules football (the VFL/AFL, the SANFL and the WAFL) player to reach the 400-game milestone, as well as the fifth player overall in the VFL/AFL, and the seventh player overall in elite Australian rules football. He was also the first VFL/AFL player to have reached the milestone playing for two different clubs. Liam Shiels
Liam Shiels (born 29 April 1991) is an Australian rules footballer who plays for the North Melbourne Football Club, in the Australian Football League (AFL). Shiels is a midfielder who developed into a key member of the midfield for the Hawthorn Football Club that would win three premierships in a row from 2013 to 2015. Shiels would also serve as vice-captain for Hawthorn from 2017–2018. AFL career Shiels was a 2nd round selection in the 2008 AFL draft, being selected at No. 34 overall. He was the youngest player drafted that year. John Platten
John Patrick Platten (born 17 March 1963) is a retired Australian rules footballer. Platten's career began in the SANFL, where he won a Magarey Medal with Central District, and also with Hawthorn, where he played in four premierships as well as winning the 1987 Brownlow Medal. Platten remains a popular and respected figure at both clubs, and is also an inductee in both the AFL and SANFL Halls of Fame. Platten also competed in the Gladiator Team Sports Challenge in 1995. Career Platten was born in South Australia. He began (and ended) his career with Central Districts in the SANFL: a junior with Centrals, he commenced in the junior ranks in 1979 and made his league debut in 1981. Jordan Lewis
Jordan Michael Lewis (born 24 April 1986) is a former Australian rules football player who played with the Hawthorn Football Club and Melbourne Football Club in the Australian Football League. AFL career Hawthorn Lewis was drafted by Hawthorn with Pick 7 in the 2004 AFL Draft. Hawthorn originally had intended to draft Lewis with Pick 10, but were concerned that Lewis would not be available by that point, and so the club made a trade with in order to gain Pick 7. He made his AFL debut in season 2005. Lewis was voted Hawthorn's best first-year player in 2005. He was a 2005 nominee for the AFL Rising Star award. Peter Knights
Peter Knights (born 30 March 1952) is a former Australian rules footballer and coach who represented in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Widely regarded as one of Australian football's finest centre half-backs, despite suffering numerous injuries, Knights was recognized for his contribution to the game when he was among the inaugural inductees into the Australian Football Hall of Fame in 1996 and later in the Hawthorn Team of the Century. Jason Dunstall
Jason Hadfield Dunstall (born 14 August 1964) is a former Australian rules footballer who played for the Hawthorn Football Club in the Australian Football League (AFL). Dunstall is arguably the greatest Australian rules footballer to come from Queensland. Dunstall was one of the first of a generation of big bodied lead-up full forwards who could also out-wrestle opponents for position in a marking contest and was also an agile team oriented player. He made his name as a full-forward during an era in which power forwards including Tony Lockett, Gary Ablett Sr., Simon Beasley, Warwick Capper, Allen Jakovich, Saverio Rocca, John Longmire, Tony Modra and Peter Sumich dominated the league goal scoring. Gary Ayres
Gary James Ayres (born 28 September 1960) is a former Australian rules footballer who played for the Hawthorn Football Club in the Australian Football League (AFL). He is currently the senior coach for the Montrose Football Club in the Eastern Football Netball League (EFNL). Ayres' playing career is honored by the existence of the Gary Ayres Award, an annual award given to the player judged best-afield by the AFL Coaches Association throughout each AFL finals series. Luke Breust
Luke Breust (born 11 November 1990) is an Australian rules footballer who plays for the Hawthorn Football Club in the Australian Football League (AFL). Early career Recruited from Temora, New South Wales, Breust played both rugby league and Australian rules football as a junior but turned his focus to Australian rules from age 14. Breust played football and basketball with Isaac Smith in Temora before the latter moved to Wagga Wagga when he was 13, with both ending up at Hawthorn where they played together in the 2013 AFL Grand Final. Jarryd Roughead
Jarryd Roughead (born 23 January 1987) is an Australian rules football coach and former player. He is currently an assistant coach with the St Kilda Football Club in the Australian Football League (AFL). He played for the Hawthorn Football Club in the AFL and was the club's captain from 2017 until his retirement in 2019. Kelvin Moore
Kelvin David Moore (born 15 August 1950) is a former Australian rules footballer who played for the Hawthorn Football Club in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Moore was one of the best full-backs of his era and played in three Hawthorn premierships during his 300-game career between 1970 and 1984. In 2005, Moore was inducted into the Australian Football Hall of Fame. He won the club's best and fairest award in 1979, was named at full-back in the Hawthorn Team of the Twentieth Century and was an inaugural member of the Hawthorn's Hall of Fame.
