Australian Paraguayans are citizens of Paraguay of Australian background. Most of them are descendants of a group of radical socialist Australians who voluntarily went to Paraguay to create a failed master-planned community, known as ''Nueva (New) Australia''. History In 1893, a group of Australian shearers fed up with the lack of job opportunities and security were persuaded by a controversial journalist, William Lane, to form the New Australia movement and over 2,000 prospective colonists signed up immediately. Paraguay was eager to offer the Australian colonists of fertile land. Having lost 90% of its male population only 20 years before in the Paraguayan War the country was desperate for manpower to work the land and re-populate the diminished nation. New Australia
New Australia was a utopian socialist settlement in Paraguay created by the New Australian Movement. The colony was officially founded on 28 September 1893 as Colonia Nueva Australia and comprised 238 people. History The New Australia Co-operative Settlement Association, known in short as the New Australia Movement, was founded by William Lane in 1892. Lane was a prominent figure in the Australian labour movement and had founded Australia's first labour newspaper—''The Worker (Brisbane), The Worker''—in 1890. León Cadogan
León Cadogan (29 July 1899 – 30 May 1973) was a Paraguayan ethnologist who made significant contributions to the study of Guaraní language and culture. Confederados
''Os Confederados'' () is the Brazilian name for Confederate expatriates who fled the Southern United States during Reconstruction and their Brazilian descendants. They were enticed to Brazil by offers of cheap land from Emperor Dom Pedro II, who had hoped to gain expertise in cotton farming. It is estimated that up to 20,000 American Confederates emigrated to the Empire of Brazil from the Southern United States after the American Civil War. Initially, most settled in the current state of São Paulo, where they founded the city of Americana, which was once part of the neighboring city of Santa Bárbara d'Oeste. Alex Sharman (born in Tasmania, Australia) is an Australian Paraguayan retired rugby union player, who played for the Paraguay national rugby union team. Personal life During the 2010 FIFA World Cup, Sharman supported Paraguay from the Sydney Opera House. Robin Wood (24 January 1944 – 17 October 2021) was a Paraguayan comic book writer and author. He is mostly known for his classical work in Argentine comics and his later work in European comics. Biography Born to a family of Australian Paraguayans, Australian-Paraguayan origins in 1944, Wood spent his childhood between Paraguay and Argentina with his mother, before leaving to do various jobs, such as dishwasher, truck driver, salesman, wood chopper, journalist and factory worker in those two countries as well as in Brazil. Anne Whitehead's 1997 book on New Australia, ''Paradise Mislaid'', provides a chapter on Robin Wood's childhood with his extended Australian-Paraguayan family. Rose Anna Summerfield (18 April 1864 – 14 April 1922) also known as Rose Cadogan or Rose Hummer,Hearn, M ''Australian Dictionary of Biography'', Supplementary Volume, Melbourne University Press, 2005, pp 373–374. was a radical Australian feminist and labour activist.
