Australian Open (bowls)
The Australian National Bowls Championships and the Australian Open are organised by Bowls Australia. Bowls dates back to 1845 in Australia but it was not until 1910, during the 1910 Carnival of bowls that South Australia proposed the formation of the Australian Bowling Council (consisting of the six states) which duly formed the following year in 1911. The first National Singles Championships were held in 1913, with each state holding the Championships in turn. The Championships were also known as the Carnival at one stage. The Championships were not held for a twelve year period from 2005 until 2016 when the Australian Open effectively replaced the National Championships. They returned in 2017 at the Club Sapphire Merimbula. Bowls Australia
Bowls Australia is the governing body for the sport of bowls in Australia. Bowls Australia is responsible for the leadership, development and management of lawn bowls in Australia. It is a not-for-profit organisation governed by a voluntary board that provides the strategic direction for the sport and the strategies that are implemented by the staff at the national office. Bowls Australia's members are the nine state and territory bowls associations. There are over 2,000 clubs and 240,000 registered participants affiliated with member states and territories. In addition there are many social bowlers participating in competitions across Australia. Bowls Australia is affiliated with World Bowls and the Australian Commonwealth Games Association where it is a core sport in the Commonwealth Games held every four years. Keith Poole (bowls)
Keith Poole (24 April 1927 – 15 September 2012) was an Australian international lawn bowler. Bowls career World Championships Poole won a silver medal in the fours with Don Woolnough, Leigh Bishop and Barry Salter and a bronze medal in the team event (Leonard Cup) at the 1976 World Outdoor Bowls Championship in Johannesburg. He also won a silver medal in the team event four years later. Commonwealth Games Poole won a silver medal as part of the fours team with Robert King, Errol Bungey and Errol Stewart at the 1974 British Commonwealth Games in Christchurch, New Zealand. Eight years later he skipped the four to a gold medal success in the 1982 Commonwealth Games in Brisbane. The gold medal winning team was Poole, Rob Dobbins, Bert Sharp and Don Sherman. Ian Schuback
Ian David Schuback (born 4 September 1952) is a former Australian lawn and indoor bowler. Biography Schuback bowled for the Coolangatta club in Queensland and was also a former professional tennis coach. He started bowling in 1980 after watching the Melbourne World Outdoor Championships. Schuback claimed a Men's Singles silver medal at the 1986 Commonwealth Games and then won the 1988 World Indoor Bowls Championship and the 1990 Commonwealth Games Pairs titles. He won the 1992 World Indoor Bowls Championships Singles, the 1994 World Indoor Bowls Championship Pairs and the 1996 World Indoor Bowls Championship Pairs. Rex Johnston (born 1950) is an Australian international lawn bowler. Bowls career World Championships Johnston won two bronze medals in the pairs and fours at the 1996 World Outdoor Bowls Championship in Adelaide. He won a silver medal in the triples at the 2000 World Outdoor Bowls Championship in Johannesburg. Commonwealth Games In addition he has appeared at four Commonwealth Games, winning a gold medal at the 1994 Commonwealth Games, and a silver at the 1998 Commonwealth Games and won he pairs title at the Australian National Bowls Championships in 1987. Cecil Bransky
Cecil Bransky (born 15 May 1942) is a former lawn and indoor international bowler. Bowls career Cecil was born in South Africa and reached the 1971 South African National Bowls Championships singles final and one year later went one better by winning it, bowling for Balfour Park, South Transvaal. Later he moved to Israel and won twelve national titles. He was the 1985 World Indoor Bowls Championship runner up. Robert Parrella
Robert Parrella (born 9 June 1944) is an Italian born, Australian international lawn and indoor bowler. Bowls career Commonwealth Games Born in Italy Rob came to prominence when winning a silver medal in the 1982 Commonwealth Games behind Willie Wood.
