Australian Langshan
The Australian Langshan is an Australian chicken breed, derived from the Croad Langshan and accepted by the Australian Poultry Standard as a recognized breed. The Australian Langshan is little known outside Australia but is a popular breed inside the country. The breed comes in both bantam and standard size. Uses The Australian Langshan is a small black, blue or white bird, with an upright carriage, long legs and medium-sized straight comb, which should be red. Ideally, the outer toe of each foot should be feathered. The black variety is a glossy black with green sheen, while the blue colour should be an even grey-blue, although males often have dark blue on the tail or hackles. Croad Langshan
The Croad Langshan is an old, heavy, soft-feathered chicken breed which probably originated in China. Origin The first recorded imports came from the Langshan ('Wolf Mountain') area in the outskirts of Nantong, just north of the lower reaches of the Yangtse-Kiang River in China) in 1872 and were undertaken by Major F.T. Croad who imported the breed into Britain. Major Croad's niece, Miss A. C. Croad, has been credited with establishing the breed in Britain. The Croad Langshan Club was formed in Britain in 1904. The name ‘Croad’ distinguishes the original type of Langshan, imported by Major Croad, which were a utility fowl of great merit, from the tall Modern Langshans which have been developed for the show pen. As with many other breeds, numbers declined after the Second World War and eventually the breed was left without a breed club in the UK. A bantam is any small variety of fowl, usually of chicken or domestic duck, duck. Most large chicken breeds and several breeds of duck have a bantam counterpart, which is much smaller than the standard-sized fowl, but otherwise similar in most or all respects. Hackle
The hackle is a clipped plume or short spray of coloured feathers that is attached to a military headdress, with different colours being associated with particular regiments. In the British Army and the armies of some Commonwealth countries, the hackle is worn by some infantry regiments, especially those designated as fusilier regiments and those with Scottish and Northern Irish origins. The modern hackle has its origins in a much longer plume, originally referred to by its Scots name, ''heckle'', which was commonly attached to the feather bonnet worn by Highland regiments (now usually only worn by drummers, pipers and bandsmen). Orpington is a town and area in south east London, England, within the London Borough of Bromley. It is 13.4 miles (21.6 km) south east of Charing Cross. Modern Langshan
The Modern Langshan is a breed of chicken derived from the Croad Langshan. Though today it is rarely seen, the breed was at one time fairly popular. History The Croad Langshan was brought to the United Kingdom from Northern China by Major F. Croad in 1872. In order to make a clearer contrast between the Croad Langshan and the then less generously feathered Black Cochin, the birds were bred to have longer legs, tighter feathering, and an overall higher carriage; resulting in the Modern Langshan. Their development, in the 1890s, would later be mirrored by the development of the German Langshan, in the early 1900s, which look quite similar to the Modern Langshan. German Langshan
The German Langshan is a breed of chicken developed from the exported Croad Langshan in Germany. It is a large, robust breed of exceptional height. Though most often raised for show, it has practical application as a layer and meat bird, as well. The standard-sized German Langshan is uncommon in both the United States and the United Kingdom, but the bantam form is popular in the latter. History The Croad Langshan was first shipped to the United Kingdom in 1969, and thence to Germany. Along with the Minorca and Plymouth Rock, the Croad Langshan was used in the creation of the German Langshan. Through selective breeding, this resulted in a brown-tinted fowl, distinctly different from other Langshan varieties which are normally only recognised as having white, black or blue feathering.
