Australian Federal By-elections
This is a list of by-elections for the House of Representatives (Australia), House of Representatives from its creation in 1901 until the present day. Casual vacancies in the Australian Parliament, Casual vacancies in the House of Representatives arise when a member dies, is disqualified or resigns, or for some other reason the seat becomes vacant. Members normally resign by tendering resignation to the Speaker of the House of Representatives. Casual vacancies are filled by by-elections. The Speaker has a discretion as to when to call a by-election and may not call one at all, for example, if a general election is imminent. At least 33 days must elapse between the issue by the Speaker of a writ and the date of a by-election, and the Speaker cannot issue the writ until receipt of a formal letter of resignation. House Of Representatives (Australia)
The House of Representatives is the lower house of the bicameral Parliament of Australia, the upper house being the Senate. Its composition and powers are established in Chapter I of the Constitution of Australia. The term of members of the House of Representatives is a maximum of three years from the date of the first sitting of the House, but on only one occasion since Federation has the maximum term been reached. The House is almost always dissolved earlier, usually alone but sometimes in a double dissolution of both Houses. Elections for members of the House of Representatives are often held in conjunction with those for the Senate. A member of the House may be referred to as a "Member of Parliament" ("MP" or "Member"), while a member of the Senate is usually referred to as a "Senator". Kerryn Phelps
Kerryn Lyndel Phelps (born 14 December 1957) is an Australian medical practitioner, public health and civil rights advocate, medical educator and former politician. She was the first woman to be elected president of the Australian Medical Association (AMA). In 2001, she was awarded the Centenary Medal for services to health and medicine. In 2011 she was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia for her service to medicine, particularly through leadership roles with the AMA, education and community health, and as a general practitioner. She is Conjoint Professor in the National Institute of Complementary Medicine at the Western Sydney University. Phelps was elected to the Council of the City of Sydney on 10 September 2016 as a member of the Clover Moore Independents Team, and was then appointed as Deputy Lord Mayor of the council. Patrick Gorman (politician)
Patrick Possum Gorman (born 12 December 1984) is an Australian politician, elected as an Australian Labor Party representative to the Division of Perth at the 2018 Perth by-election. Early life Gorman was born on 12 December 1984 in East Fremantle, Western Australia. His parents are Wendy and Ron Gorman, who were both teachers. Gorman has a younger brother. He attended Lance Holt School, a small independent primary school in Fremantle, and Melville Senior High School. He then completed a Bachelor of Social Science at Curtin University, and a Graduate Diploma of Business and a Master of Business Administration at the University of Western Australia. Tim Hammond
Timothy Jerome Hammond (born 25 March 1975) is a former Australian politician. He was the member for Perth in the Australian House of Representatives. He is a member of the Australian Labor Party and succeeded the previous member, Alannah MacTiernan, at the 2016 federal election. He was initially awarded the portfolios of Shadow Assistant Minister for Resources, Innovation, Western Australia, The Digital Economy and Start Ups in the Labor Shadow Ministry. In September 2016 he was promoted to the full ministry as Shadow Minister for Consumer Affairs and Shadow Minister Assisting for Resources. Hammond was a barrister before entering politics. He previously ran unsuccessfully for parliament as the Labor candidate for Swan in 2010. A by-election for the Australian House of Representatives seat of Perth took place on Saturday 28 July 2018, following the resignation of incumbent Labor MP Tim Hammond. In early counting, within 90 minutes of the close of polls, the Australian Broadcasting Corporation's psephologist Antony Green's electoral computer had predicted Labor to retain the electorate with an increased margin. Centre Alliance
Centre Alliance, formerly known as the Nick Xenophon Team (NXT), is a centrist political party in Australia based in the state of South Australia. It currently has one representative in the Parliament, Rebekha Sharkie in the House of Representatives. Since its founding in July 2013, the party has twice changed names. At the time of the 2016 Australian federal election, it was known as the Nick Xenophon Team (NXT). After Nick Xenophon founded SA-BEST, an affiliated state-based party, NXT sought to change its name to SA-BEST (Federal). But prior to Australian Electoral Commission approval, Nick Xenophon left politics, and the party withdrew its application and changed its name to Centre Alliance. In 2018, Centre Alliance senator Stirling Griff stated that SA-BEST is "a separate entity, a separate association, a separate party" from Centre Alliance. Rebekha Carina Sharkie ( Che; born 24 August 1972) is an Australian politician and member of the Centre Alliance party. She is a member of the Australian House of Representatives, representing the Division of Mayo in South Australia. At the 2016 Australian federal election, 2016 federal election she defeated Liberal Party of Australia, Liberal Jamie Briggs, and was the first Nick Xenophon Team member to be elected to the Australian House of Representatives. On 11 May 2018, Sharkie resigned from the House of Representatives as a part of the 2017–18 Australian parliamentary eligibility crisis. Susan Lamb
Susan Lamb (born 23 March 1972) is an Australian politician. She was the member for the Division of Longman originally elected at the 2016 election on 2 July 2016 until her resignation on 10 May 2018 as a part of the 2017–18 Australian parliamentary eligibility crisis. She regained the seat on 28 July as one of five candidates to contest seats in the Super Saturday by-elections. She went to lose her seat at the 2019 election, due to the swing against Labor in Queensland. Life Born in Mackay, Queensland, Lamb was a teacher aide, then a lead organiser with United Voice from 2012. Lamb defeated the Liberal National Party of Queensland's Assistant Minister for Innovation Wyatt Roy in the 2016 Australian federal election. Joshua Hamilton Wilson (born 5 June 1972) is an Australian politician. He is the Labor member for Fremantle in the House of Representatives, serving from 2 July 2016 until his resignation on 10 May 2018 as a part of the 2017–18 Australian parliamentary eligibility crisis and then since the 2018 Fremantle by-election. Early life Wilson was born on 5 June 1972 in Westminster, London. As a child he lived in India and Long Island, New York before moving to Fremantle. Education Wilson has a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) from the University of Western Australia, and a Master of Arts (Honours) from the University of Melbourne.
