Australian Baseball League (1989-1999)
The Australian Baseball League (ABL) is a professional baseball league in Australia. The league is governed by the Australian Baseball Federation (ABF). It uses the same name as a now-defunct competition held during the 1990s, and though it shares some history of the original league with the Claxton Shield awarded to winners of both competitions, it is considered to be a separate competition. Because the ABL's season takes place from November to February, the ABL is one of baseball's recognised winter leagues (although it is summer in Australia when the season takes place), where minor-league prospects in North America are often assigned as an English-speaking alternative to the primary Spanish-speaking Latin America-based winter leagues. Michael Hennessy
Michael Joseph Hennessy was an Irish politician and businessman. He was first elected to Dáil Éireann as a Businessmen's Party Teachta Dála (TD) for Cork East and North East at the 1922 general election. He was elected as a Cumann na nGaedheal TD for Cork East at the 1923, June 1927 and September 1927 general elections. He lost his seat at the 1932 general election. Hennessy lived at 11 Rahilly Street, Cobh (formerly King Street). Canberra Bushrangers
The Canberra Bushrangers were originally created as the Melbourne Bushrangers, To replace the Melbourne Monarchs in the 1991-92 Australian Baseball League Championship after the Monarchs were expelled from the competition. The Bushrangers were based in Melbourne at the Melbourne Ballpark as well as playing a few games in Ballarat until they relocated to Canberra for the 1993-94 championship, the season after the Monarchs had been reformed. The Bushrangers played for a further two seasons in Canberra at Bruce Stadium until they folded due to heavy financial losses after the 1994-95 championship. Cameron Cairncross
Cameron Cairncross (born 11 May 1972) is a former left-handed pitcher in Major League Baseball who debuted for the Cleveland Indians on 20 July 2000, and pitched his final game on 1 October of that same season. Cairncross was born in Cairns, Queensland, Australia and attended Cairns State High School. He signed with the San Diego Padres as an amateur free agent in 1990, and began his professional career a year later with the Charleston Rainbows. For the season, he had an 8–5 win–loss record and a 3.56 earned run average (ERA) in 24 games. The following season, Cairncross pitched for the Waterloo Diamonds and had an 8–8 record, a 3.61 ERA, and 138 strikeouts in 24 games. In 1993, he was promoted to the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes, and in 29 games for them, he had a 10–11 record and a 5.12 ERA. Kelly Wunsch
Kelly Douglas Wunsch (born July 12, 1972) is an American former Major League Baseball (MLB) pitcher who played for the Chicago White Sox and Los Angeles Dodgers from 2000 to 2005. Amateur career A native of Houston, Texas, Wunsch attended Texas A&M University. In 1992, he played collegiate summer baseball with the Orleans Cardinals of the Cape Cod Baseball League and was named a league all-star. Professional career Drafted by the Milwaukee Brewers in the 1st round of the 1993 Major League Baseball Draft, Wunsch made his Major League Baseball debut with the Chicago White Sox on April 3, 2000. After joining the Dodgers in 2005, Wunsch pitched quite well as a left-handed specialist, but was plagued by injuries. He signed with the Houston Astros in February 2007 to attempt a comeback, but was released on March 28. Gary Nilsson
Gary Nilsson (born 28 November 1963 in Brisbane, Australia) is a former Australian baseball player who played as a pitcher for the Lakeland Tigers in 1984 and in the Australian Baseball League from 1989 to 1996. He is the brother of former All-Star, Dave Nilsson as well as former minor leaguer Bob Nilsson. His son is Mitch Nilsson, currently contracted to the Cleveland Indians and nephew Jay Nilsson, former Gulf Coast Indians player. He is currently pitching coach for the Brisbane Bandits in the Australian Baseball League. Playing career Gary was signed to the Detroit Tigers in 1983. The next year, he played in advanced A baseball with the Lakeland Tigers and was 1–4 with a 5.95 ERA. He was released at the end of the year. John Boothby
Major-General John George Boothby (22 June 1824 – 27 April 1876) was an English first-class cricketer and British Army officer. The son of The Reverend Brooke Boothby, he was born in June 1824 at Southwell, Nottinghamshire. He was educated at Charterhouse School, after which he attended the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich. He graduated from there as a second lieutenant into the Royal Artillery in June 1844, with promotion to first lieutenant following in April 1846. Shortly before the commencement of the Crimean War, he was promoted to second captain in August 1852. Boothby served in the conflict and saw action at the battles of Alma and Balaclava, and the Siege of Sevastopol. He was twice promoted during the war, being made a brevet major in December 1854, and promoted to captain in September 1855. Norwood Oval
Norwood Oval (currently known as Coopers Stadium due to sponsorship from the Adelaide-based Coopers Brewery) is a suburban oval in the western end of Norwood, an inner eastern suburb of Adelaide, South Australia. It is owned by Norwood, Payneham & St Peters Council but managed by the Norwood Football Club. Though mainly used for Australian rules football, the oval has been used for a variety of other sporting and community events including baseball, soccer, rugby league and American football. It is the home ground for the Norwood Football Club ("The Redlegs") in the South Australian National Football League (SANFL) and the primary home ground of the Adelaide Crows in AFL Women's (AFLW). Sydney Wave
The Sydney Wave were formed after the first Australian Baseball League championship purchasing the Sydney Metros licence. The Wave had a bit more luck then the Metros lasting a further two seasons, both at different stadiums before disbanding due to not having a lit stadium and sold their licence to the Hunter Eagles. Adelaide Giants
The Adelaide Giants are a professional baseball team that plays in the Australian Baseball League. They are one of the six foundation franchises of the league, in its first incarnation from 1989 to 1999. The team adopted the name Bite or Adelaide Bite when the league relaunched in 2010, officially Adelaide ETSA Bite, when the South Australian power company ETSA Utilities became its major sponsor.
