UCI Track Cycling World Championships
The UCI Track Cycling World Championships are the set of world championship events for the various disciplines and distances in track cycling. They are regulated by the Union Cycliste Internationale. Before 1900, they were administered by the UCI's predecessor, the International Cycling Association (ICA). Current events include: time trial, keirin, individual pursuit, team pursuit, points race, scratch race, sprint, team sprint, omnium and madison. Women's events are generally shorter than men's. Events which are no longer held include the motor paced events and tandem events. History World championships were first held in 1893, in Chicago, under the ICA. They were for amateurs. Separate professional races were held from 1895, in Cologne. Amateurs and professionals competed in separate events until 1993, after which they raced together in "open" races. Jack Standen
Jack Standen (20 February 1909 – 29 October 1973) track racing cyclist. Standen was educated at Waverley College He competed in the sprint event at the 1928 Summer Olympics. Amateur career Standen had a promising start to his career in January 1927, winning the NSW Amateur titles over one mile and five miles. He entered the Australian Track Championships and Olympic tests at 18 years old, finishing first in every event he entered however he was disqualified in the Australian mile championship for interference with Dunc Gray. Standen and Gray were selected to represent Australia in track cycling at the 1928 Summer Olympics. No rider was sent for the road events, with Fatty Lamb being controversially overlooked, so Standen was entered for the road race, despite not competing in the Australian Olympic trial for that event. Russell Mockridge
Edward Russell Mockridge (18 July 1928 – 13 September 1958) was a racing cyclist from Geelong, Victoria, Australia. He died during a race, in collision with a bus. Family The son of Robert Glover Mockridge and Aileen Claire Mockridge, née Riley, Edward Russell Mockridge (known as Russell) was born in Melbourne on 18 July 1928. Mockridge married Irene Pritchard (-2004), widely known as "Rene", in London, in 1953; they had a daughter, Melinda, who was born in Ghent, Belgium in December 1954. Career Mockridge started in 1946 by winning his first race of 40 km with Geelong Amateur Cycling Club. For his upper-class accent he was dubbed ''Little Lord Fauntleroy'', but his wins soon earned him the nickname of ''The Geelong Flyer''. He became described as 'Australia's greatest all-round cyclist for all time'.
