Zali Steggall (born 16 April 1974) is an Australian politician, lawyer and former Olympic athlete. She has been independent member for Warringah since the 2019 Australian federal election when she defeated the incumbent, former Prime Minister Tony Abbott. She is Australia's most internationally successful alpine skier, winning a bronze medal in slalom at the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano, and a World Championship gold medal in 1999. In the Winter Olympics she is Australia's first individual medalist, first female medalist, and only medalist in alpine skiing. Steggall's Olympic career extended from Albertville in 1992 to Salt Lake City in 2002. The defending world champion was Stephan Eberharter of Austria, while Switzerland's Franz Heinzer was the defending World Cup super-G champion, and his countryman Paul Accola was leading the current season. The Men's Downhill competition of the Albertville 1992 Olympics was held at Val d'Isère on Sunday, 9 February. The defending world champion was Franz Heinzer of Switzerland, who was also the defending World Cup downhill champion and led the current season. Defending Olympic champion Pirmin Zurbriggen of Switzerland had retired from competition two years earlier; this was the fourth consecutive Olympics without the defending champion in the field. The race was run on a new course on ''La Face de Bellevarde'', designed by 1972 champion Bernhard Russi. Austria's Patrick Ortlieb, who had yet to win a World Cup event, won the gold medal; Franck Piccard of France was only 0.05 seconds back to take the silver, and the bronze medalist was Günther Mader of Austria. Steven Lee (born 6 August 1962 in Falls Creek) is an Australian alpine skier. He competed in the 1984, 1988 and 1992 Winter Olympics, and had a competitive career lasting just on 25 years. He is the second of only 3 Australian skiers ever to claim victory on the Alpine World Cup circuit. He has also done sports commentating for channels 7, 9 and 10, co-owns ''Chill Factor'' magazine, and is a national selector and president of Falls Creek Race Club. He has worked in movies with Roger Moore and Jackie Chan. Media biography Lee has been the television host and commentator, especially in winter sports. Four events were contested at La halle de glace Olympique, located next to the Théâtre des Cérémonies, a couple of kilometers west of downtown Albertville.
