Australia Women's Championships (baseball)
The Australian Women's Championships is an annual event run by the Australian Baseball Federation. The Championship includes the women's Queensland Rams, Western Australia Heat, Victoria Aces, New South Wales Patriots as well as Victorian Provincial, a New South Wales Country team and Australian Capital Territory. The tournament for the first 10 years was dominated by Victoria, winning nine and only rivalled by New South Wales, who have won two tournaments. This is mainly due to the strong women's baseball competition in Victoria, which includes 33 teams over three divisions, perhaps the largest local women's baseball competition in the world. In 2010, the Western Australia Heat went through the tournament undefeated, defeating New South Wales in the final 7–6. This was the first final without Victoria competing in it and the first time Western Australia won the tournament. Baseball Australia, formerly the Australian Baseball Federation is the national governing body of Baseball in Australia and owns the Australian Baseball League. Baseball is played in all the mainland states and territories, but it struggles for popularity due to the popularity of many other sports, including the comparable sport of cricket, in which Australia has always been one of the leading nations. School-aged children are generally guided toward a future in cricket, rather than baseball, especially in the private schooling system. Baseball Australia were previously 25% stakeholders along with Major League Baseball of the ABL when it began play in November 2010. Baseball Competitions In Australia
Baseball is a bat-and-ball sport played between two teams of nine players each, taking turns batting and fielding. The game occurs over the course of several plays, with each play generally beginning when a player on the fielding team, called the pitcher, throws a ball that a player on the batting team, called the batter, tries to hit with a bat. Women's Baseball In Australia
In the 1880s in Victoria, there were school competitions for girls involving interschool competitions for rounders, an early form of baseball. The competitions were abandoned in the 1890s. Girls who played rounders/baseball during the 1880s and 1890s were required to wear long sleeved shirts and long skirts. These restricted a player's ability to move. At Merton Hall in 1908, school girls who did not want to play other sports were required to play baseball. Merton Hall's girls baseball team competed against Lauriston and PLC. During the 1900s, baseball was a year-round sport. Because of clothing restrictions, during the 1900s, "two masters, captaining opposing teams of boarders and day girls, did all the running."
