Australia Speedway Team
Australia is one of the major teams in international motorcycle speedway with the country regarded as the birthplace of the sport in the 1920s. The current team is managed by former rider Mark Lemon (speedway rider), Mark Lemon, and captained by 2012 Speedway Grand Prix, 2012 World Champion Chris Holder. Australia finished 3rd in the 2014 Speedway World Cup, 2014 Speedway World Cup Final on 2 August in Bydgoszcz, Poland. Speedway World Cup The Australian national speedway team has won both the Speedway World Team Cup (1960–2000) and the Speedway World Cup (2001–present) on two occasions respectively, and were a major force at the turn of the 21st century. The team won its first World Team Cup in 1976 with captain John Boulger, Phil Crump, Billy Sanders, Phil Herne and reserve Garry Middleton, but had to wait over 30 years before winning three tournaments out of four, between 1999 and 2002. Mark Lemon (speedway Rider)
Mark Ian John Lemon (born 12 February 1973) is an Australian Motorcycle speedway, speedway rider who has had a long career in British speedway and has won the Victorian Individual Speedway Championship, Victoria State Championship on three occasions. Lemon is currently the Manager of both the Australia national speedway team, Senior and Australia national under-21 speedway team, Under-21 Australian speedway teams. He is also the manager of the Belle Vue Aces in the SGB Premiership. Garry Middleton
Garry David Middleton (born 19 July 1948 Corowa, New South Wales - 23 November 1994) was an Australian motorcycle speedway rider. Career He first came to Britain in 1967 a rode for a short time with the Belle Vue Aces and the King's Lynn Stars before getting a permanent ride with the Wimbledon Dons. He stayed with the Dons for the 1968 season but in 1969 he moved to the Hackney Hawks. He rode for the Hawks from 1969 until 1971. In 1972 he moved to the Oxford Rebels following a contract dispute with promoter Len Silver. Middleton also raced as an International rider for Australia. 1976 Speedway World Team Cup
The 1976 Speedway World Team Cup was the 17th edition of the FIM Speedway World Team Cup to determine the team world champions. The final took place at the White City Stadium in London. Australia became only the fourth country to win the title. They ended the run of England by knocking them out in the British qualifying round. Great Britain National Speedway Team
The Great Britain Speedway Team (also known as GB Speedway Team) is one of the major teams in international speedway. The team is managed by former Great Britain riders Oliver Allen and Simon Stead, and captained by the 2018 Speedway World Champion Tai Woffinden. Speedway World Cup The England national speedway team has won the Speedway World Team Cup on five occasions with the Great Britain side winning four times. They were a major force in the 1970s, winning five consecutive tournaments, two as England and three as Great Britain. Jim Airey
James Sydney Airey (born 19 August 1941 in Earlwood, New South Wales) is a former Australian international motorcycle speedway rider who rode in the 1971 World Final in Göteborg, Sweden and was a member of the Great Britain team that won the 1971 Speedway World Team Cup in Wrocław, Poland. Jim is also a four time Australian Champion having won the title in 1968, 1969, 1970 and 1972, as well as a five time NSW State Champion and one time Queensland and Victorian State Champion.. New South Wales Individual Speedway Championship
The New South Wales Individual Speedway Championship is a Motorcycle speedway championship held annually in New South Wales to determine the NSW State champion. The event is organised by the NSW Solo Riders' Association and is sanctioned by Motorcycling Australia (MA). Billy Sanders from Sydney holds the record for the most number of NSW Championship wins with eight between 1976 and 1985. From his first win in 1976 until his last win in 1985, with the exception of 1983 when no title was run, Sanders was the only winner of the NSW title. Aub Lawson, Craig Boyce and Chris Holder are next with five wins. Only Holder, the reigning champion (2011), is still actively racing. Seven international riders have won the NSW Solo Championship. Australian Individual Speedway Championship
The Australian Solo Championship is a motorcycle speedway championship held each year to determine the Australian national champion. It is organised by Motorcycling Australia (MA) and is the oldest continuously running national speedway championship in the world having been run since 1926 with the exception of 1942-1945 when racing was suspended during World War II and 1955-1961 when the championship was not held. The first Australian Solo Championship in 1926 was held at the Newcastle Showground in Newcastle. It was won by American rider Cecil Brown from Mick Brennan and Roy Hindle. Legendary Danish rider Ole Olsen (1976) and Australia's own Jason Crump (2007) are the only riders who have won the championship while being the reigning Speedway World Champion. Craig Boyce
Craig Boyce (born 2 August 1967 in Sydney, Australia) was a motorcycle speedway rider who primarily rode for the Poole Pirates in the British Elite League. After retiring from riding, Boyce became manager of the Australian national team until 2012. Boyce is a three-time Australian Solo Champion. He won all of his championships (1991, 1996 and 1997) with a 15-point maximum. Jason Lyons
Jason Rodney Lyons (born 15 June 1970 in Mildura, Victoria) is an Australian international motorcycle speedway rider. Jason is the son of former rider Rod Lyons. The younger Lyons was the winner of the Australian Pairs Championship in 1992 as well as Victorian State Champion in 1997, 1998 and 1999 and he won the South Australian Championship in 1999. Jason Lyons has finished runner up five times in the Australian Championship, his best finish in his national championship. He also finished third in the 1991 Australian Under-21 Championship. In his junior speedway career, Lyons finished second behind good friend and fellow Mildura native Leigh Adams in the 1986 Australian Under-16 Championship. Todd Wiltshire
Todd Wiltshire (born 26 September 1968 in Bankstown, New South Wales) is a retired Australian motorcycle speedway rider who competed at the highest level of the sport, finishing a career best third in the 1990 Individual Speedway World Championship at the Odsal Stadium in Bradford, England. He is also a two time Australian Champion, winning in 1999 and 2001. Career Australia Despite being born in Sydney, Todd Wiltshire spent most of his childhood in Newcastle. He started racing in 1979 at the Lake Macquarie Mini-Cycle Club, giving his older sister Fiona the credit for getting him started in racing saying she was his inspiration through her own involvement in dirt track racing.
