Australia At The 1988 Summer Olympics
Australia competed at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul, South Korea. 252 competitors, 180 men and 72 women, took part in 145 events in 24 sports. Rechelle Margaret Hawkes, (born 30 May 1967 in Albany, Western Australia) is the former captain of the Australian Women's Hockey Team, best known as the ''Hockeyroos'',she was captain for eight years and became the second Australian woman after swimmer Dawn Fraser to win three Olympic gold medals at three separate Olympic Games: Seoul 1988, Atlanta 1996 and Sydney 2000. Hawkes also competed at the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona, where Australia finished fifth. Tracey Lee Belbin OAM (born 24 June 1967 in Cairns, Queensland) is a former field hockey player from Australia, who represented her native country at two consecutive Summer Olympics, starting in 1988 in Seoul, South Korea. There she won the gold medal with the Women's National Team. As a student of the University of Queensland in Brisbane she graduated in 1993, getting a double major in psychology. After her active career she became a hockey coach, working as an assistant for the South African Women's Team. In January 1999 Belbin was named Head Coach of the US Women's Team, with whom she won the silver medal at the 1999 Pan American Games. Carbon was super fast and set up many goals for Australia during her 125-game career. She was a ballet dancer, swimmer and runner in her youth.
