Australia 2020 Summit
The Australia 2020 Summit was a convention, referred to in Australian media as a summit, which was held over 18-19 April 2008 at Parliament House in Canberra, Australia, aiming to "help shape a long-term strategy for the nation's future". Announced by the new Prime Minister Kevin Rudd, the summit drew limited bipartisan support from Brendan Nelson and the opposition Coalition parties and ran as 10 working groups of 100 participants. There were 1002 delegates in attendance to discuss ten "critical areas". Ideas and proposals were invited from all members of the community and an official website was set up to accept submissions. Anne Kelso
Professor Anne Kelso (born 1954) is an Australian biomedical researcher specialising in immunology and influenza. She is the Chief Executive Officer of the Australian Government's National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC). Education and career Kelso obtained her Bachelor of Science (Honours) in 1975 and PhD in immunology in 1980 at the University of Melbourne. Following postdoctoral research at the Swiss Institute for Experimental Cancer Research, Kelso undertook research in the laboratories of Donald Metcalf and Gustav Nossal at the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research (1982-1992) and then the Queensland Institute of Medical Research (now QIMR Berghofer Medical Research Institute) (1992-2007). Aguil Chut-Deng
Aguil Chut Deng Acouth (1967 – ), also known as Aguil de'Chut Deng or Aguil Chut-Deng, was a South Sudanese revolutionary and activist. She was a member of "Katiba Banat", the women's battalion of the Sudan People's Liberation Army (SPLA), during the Second Sudanese Civil War. As a refugee in Australia, she founded the Sudanese Australian International Activist Group, and took part in rallies to raise awareness of the conflict. After the independence of South Sudan in 2011, she founded South Sudanese Women Advocacy for Peace. She also focused on issues faced by South Sudanese refugees in Australia. Peter Cosgrove
General (Australia), General Sir Peter John Cosgrove, (born 28 July 1947) is a retired senior Australian Army officer who served as the 26th governor-general of Australia, in office from 2014 to 2019. A graduate of the Royal Military College, Duntroon, Cosgrove fought in the Military history of Australia during the Vietnam War, Vietnam War, receiving the Military Cross in 1971. From 1983 to 1984, he was commander of the 1st Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment, and he later served as commander of the 6th Brigade (Australia), 6th Brigade and the 1st Division (Australia), 1st Division. Cosgrove rose to prominence in 1999, when he served as commander of the International Force for East Timor (INTERFET), which oversaw the peacekeeping mission in East Timor during its transition to independence. Sharan Burrow
Sharan Leslie Burrow (born 12 December 1954) was the general secretary of the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC) (2010-2022) and a former president of the Australian Council of Trade Unions (ACTU) (2000–2010). She was the first woman to become General Secretary of the ITUC since its foundation in 2006, and was the second woman to become President of the ACTU. Early involvement in Australian labour movement Burrow was born in Warren, New South Wales to a family with strong involvement in the labour movement. She graduated in teaching with the University of New South Wales in 1976 and became a teacher in the early 1980s, which allowed her to become involved in the New South Wales Teachers Federation. Sarah Bekessy
Sarah Bekessy is an Australian interdisciplinary conservation scientist with a background in conservation biology and experience in social sciences, planning, and design. Her research interests focus on the intersection between science, policy, and the design of environmental management. She is currently a professor and ARC Future Fellow at RMIT University (Melbourne, Australia) in the School of Global, Urban and Social Studies. She leads the Interdisciplinary Conservation Science Research Group (ICON Science). Waleed Aly
Waleed Aly (born 15 August 1978) is an Australian journalist, academic, and lawyer. Aly is a lecturer in politics at Monash University working in their Global Terrorism Research Centre, and a co-host of Network Ten's news and current affairs television program '' The Project''. He also writes for Fairfax Media, co-hosts ''The Minefield'', an ABC RN program about ethical dilemmas of modern life, and is lead guitarist in rock band Robot Child. Michael Wesley
Michael Wesley (1968) is an Australian academic of Indian descent. He was appointed Professor of International Relations and Deputy VC International at the University of Melbourne in 2019, and was previously Dean of the College of Asia and the Pacific and Professor at The Australian National University. He also consults extensively for the Australian government. Early life and education Wesley was born in India but moved to Australia with his parents aged four years old. He grew up in Nambour, south-east Queensland. Wesley went to Nambour State High School, and then to the University of Queensland. He completed a PhD at the University of St Andrews in Scotland. Fiona Wood
Fiona Melanie Wood (born 2 February 1958) is an English-born Australian plastic surgeon working in Perth, Western Australia. She is the director of the Royal Perth Hospital burns unit and the Western Australia Burns Service. In addition, Wood is also a clinical professor with the School of Paediatrics and Child Health at the University of Western Australia and director of the McComb Research Foundation. Early life and education Wood was born in Yorkshire, England, 2 February 1958. She attended Ackworth School near Pontefract, West Yorkshire. Rosemary Alison Stanton (née Finley) (born 5 June 1944, Sydney, New South Wales) is an Australian nutritionist and dietician, known for her media appearances. Biography Stanton has been called "the first 'celebrity' dietitian". As of 2018, Stanton had written 33 books, including several textbooks, many scientific papers and over 3500 articles. She has been a regular guest on many TV programs, including The Investigators and the Checkout (ABC) and was a presenter on Burke's Backyard. Margaret Sheil
Margaret Mary Sheil is an Australian academic and the Vice Chancellor and President of Queensland University of Technology. Early years Margaret Sheil was born in Goulburn, New South Wales in August 1961. As a teenager, she regularly visited the Department of Chemistry at the University of New South Wales (UNSW) where her mother, a nurse, was seconded to work on a scientific study to monitor lead levels in the blood of children exposed to petroleum.
