Australasian Zionist Youth Council
The Australasian Zionist Youth Council (AZYC) was established to strengthen Zionist aims in Australia by facilitating collaboration amongst Australian Zionist youth movements. It is the umbrella organisation for seven Zionist youth movements in Australia and New Zealand. The seven member movements have branches in Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, Brisbane, Adelaide and Canberra in Australia and Auckland and Wellington in New Zealand. The AZYC is responsible for governance of the movements, representing the movements' interests to the Zionist Federation of Australia and is a forum for cooperation and dispute resolution between the movements. The AZYC is instrumental in operating programs for Jewish youth in the smaller Jewish communities of Adelaide and Canberra by working with youth organisations Jewish Adelaide Zionist Youth (JAZY) and Canberra Zionist Youth (CATZ), respectively. The history of Jews in Australia traces the history of Australian Jews from the British settlement of Australia commencing in 1788. Though Europeans had visited Australia before 1788, there is no evidence of any Jewish sailors among the crew. The first Jews known to have come to Australia came as convicts transported to Botany Bay in 1788 aboard the First Fleet that established the first European settlement on the continent, on the site of present-day Sydney. Netzer Olami is the worldwide youth movement of the World Union for Progressive Judaism (WUPJ) and is affiliated to Arzenu (the Zionist arm of the WUPJ). "Netzer" is an acronym in Hebrew for Reform Zionist Youth (''Noar Tsioni Reformi'', נוער ציוני רפורמי), and Netzer Olami means 'Global Netzer'. Hineni Youth and Welfare or Hineni is a Modern Orthodox, politically active, Zionist youth movement. It was founded in Sydney, Australia, and has centres in Sydney, Melbourne and Canberra. In Sydney, Hineni is the official youth movement of the Central Synagogue. In Melbourne, Hineni is affiliated with and supported by Caulfield Hebrew Congregation, where weekly meetings take place. In Canberra, Hineni is based at the Canberra Jewish Community Centre. Hineni runs weekly educational meetings for Jewish youth from years 3–12, as well as biannual camps, Israel year programs, seminars and other communal events. Bnei Akiva ( he, בְּנֵי עֲקִיבָא, , "Children of Akiva") is the largest religious Zionist youth movement in the world, with over 125,000 members in 42 countries. The Betar Movement ( he, תנועת בית"ר), also spelled Beitar (), is a Revisionist Zionist youth movement founded in 1923 in Riga, Latvia, by Vladimir (Ze'ev) Jabotinsky. Chapters sprang up across Europe, even during World War II. After the war and during the settlement of what became Israel, Betar was traditionally linked to the original Herut and then Likud political parties of Jewish pioneers. It was closely affiliated with the pre-Israel Revisionist Zionist paramilitary group Irgun Zevai Leumi. It was one of many right-wing movements and youth groups arising at that time that adopted special salutes and uniforms.
