Austral Salon
The Austral Salon of Music, Literature and the Fine Arts also known as the Austral Salon is a club that was established for women interested in the fine arts in Melbourne. Establishment The Austral Salon was founded in January 1890 by female journalists led by Mary Hirst Browne, as a meeting place for women writers. The Countess of Hopetoun, wife of the Victorian Governor, later first Governor-General of Australia, was the Salon’s first Patron. Journalist Agnes Murphy, poet Ada Cambridge and journalist Catherine Hay Thomson were among the founders of the Austral Salon. The club was originally located at 115-119 Collins Street, Melbourne in the Austral Building. Activities Before the opening of the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music the Austral club helped aspiring musicians. ''The Argus'' was an Australian daily morning newspaper in Melbourne from 2 June 1846 to 19 January 1957, and was considered to be the general Australian newspaper of record for this period. Widely known as a conservative newspaper for most of its history, it adopted a left-leaning approach from 1949. ''The Argus''s main competitor was David Syme's more liberal-minded newspaper, ''The Age''. Hersey Alice Hope, Marchioness of Linlithgow ( née Eveleigh-de Moleyns; 31 March 18673 April 1937) was a British aristocrat, who was the wife of John Hope, 1st Marquess of Linlithgow, who, as the 7th Earl of Hopetoun, was the first Governor-General of Australia 1901-1902. Ada Cambridge (21 November 1844 – 19 July 1926), later known as Ada Cross, was an English-born Australian writer. She wrote more than 25 works of fiction, three volumes of poetry and two autobiographical works.Cato (1989) p. v Many of her novels were serialised in Australian newspapers but never published in book form. Catherine Hay Thomson (died 1928) was a Scottish-born Australian undercover journalist, literary agent and educator. Early life and education Catherine Hay Thomson was born in Glasgow, educated in Melbourne and was one of the early female graduates from the University of Melbourne. Career Thomson was principal of Queen's College, Ballarat for some time. In 1881, she opened a boarding and day school for girls in Spring Street, Melbourne. Thomson began writing investigative articles, being referred to in The Bulletin in 1886 as "the female 'Vagabond' of Melbourne". Thomson worked as an undercover journalist, disguising herself as a man to visit brothels and taverns investigating corruption which was exposed in her newspaper articles. She investigated undercover as an attendant at the Kew Asylum, a psychiatric hospital in Melbourne and also as an assistant nurse at the Melbourne Hospital. The Austral Building is a broadly English Queen Anne revival building located at 115-119 Collins Street, Melbourne, Australia. It was designed by noted Melbourne architect, Nahum Barnet, built in 1890, and housed noted literary and artistic tenants until well into the 20th century. Melbourne Conservatorium Of Music
The Melbourne Conservatorium of Music is the music school at the University of Melbourne and part of the Faculty of Fine Arts and Music. It is located near the Melbourne City Centre on the Southbank campus of the University of Melbourne. Ada Crossley
Ada Jemima Crossley (3 March 1871 – 17 October 1929) was an Australian contralto notable as the first RCA Victor Red Seal, Red Seal recording artist engaged in the US by the Victor Talking Machine Company in 1903. Born at Tarraville, Gippsland, Victoria, she was the daughter of Edwards Wallis Crossley (died 11 April 1902), an ironmonger, and Harriette, née Morris, both from Northamptonshire, England. Ada was the sixth surviving child in a family of twelve children. Crossley's singing in the country met with so much appreciation that she was sent to Melbourne to be trained, where Frederic Hymen Cowen, Sir Frederic Cowen, (who had come from London to conduct the orchestra at the List of world's fairs, Melbourne International Exhibition of 1888–9), heard her sing and gave her advice. Amy Castles
Amy Eliza Castles (25 July 1880 – 19 November 1951), was an Australian soprano. Family The daughter of Joseph Castles (1849-1933), and Mary Ellen Castles (1855-1937), née Fallon, Amy Eliza Castles was born in Melbourne, Australia on 25 July 1880. Her two sisters, Ethel Margaret "Dolly" Castles (1884–1971) and Eileen Anne Castles (1886–1970) were also highly regarded, talented sopranos. Education She was educated at St Kilian's primary school and St Mary's College (Seymour), St Mary's College. Career On 26 March 1910 she sang the title role in the Australian premiere of Giacomo Puccini's ''Madama Butterfly'', at the Theatre Royal, Sydney, Theatre Royal in Sydney. She made her United States début at Carnegie Hall in 1917. Castles never married. She lived with her sister, Dolly Castles, in Camberwell. Florence Austral (26 April 1892 – 15 May 1968) was an Australian operatic soprano renowned for her interpretation of the most demanding Wagnerian female roles, although she never gained the opportunity to appear at the Bayreuth Festival or New York's Metropolitan Opera. It has been said of Austral that she was "considered to have few equals in sheer vocal quality until the arrival of Kirsten Flagstad. Acting was not her strong point; and her characterisations were mainly achieved with the voice, which made her recordings so vastly enjoyable."
