Aurora (Artemisia Gentileschi)
''Aurora'' is a c.1625-1627 painting by the Italian artist Artemisia Gentileschi, depicting the Roman goddess of dawn. It is part of a private collection in Rome. Subject matter In Roman mythology, the goddess Aurora rises every morning to signal the arrival of the Sun by coloring the sky, which was used in the period as a metaphor for creativity and beauty. Her contemporary Pierre Dumonstier created a drawing of Artemisia's hand holding a brush which refers to the "hands of Aurora", praising both her beauty as well as her skill as a colorist. Provenance The painting passed through the Arrighetti family before arriving on the art market in Florence in 1974. Bissell believes the patron was Niccolò Arrighetti, associate of Michelangelo Buonarroti, who had commissioned Gentileschi to paint ''Allegory of Inclination'' a decade earlier. Artemisia Gentileschi
Artemisia Lomi or Artemisia Gentileschi (, ; 8 July 1593) was an Italian Baroque painter. Gentileschi is considered among the most accomplished seventeenth-century artists, initially working in the style of Caravaggio. She was producing professional work by the age of 15. In an era when women had few opportunities to pursue artistic training or work as professional artists, Gentileschi was the first woman to become a member of the Accademia di Arte del Disegno in Florence and she had an international clientele. Many of Gentileschi's paintings feature women from myths, allegories, and the Bible, including victims, suicides, and warriors. Some of her best known subjects are ''Susanna and the Elders'' (particularly the 1610 version in Pommersfelden), ''Judith Slaying Holofernes'' (her 1614–1620 version is in the Uffizi gallery), and '' Judith and Her Maidservant'' (her version of 1625 is in the Detroit Institute of Arts). Oil painting is the process of painting with pigments with a medium of drying oil as the binder. It has been the most common technique for artistic painting on wood panel or canvas for several centuries, spreading from Europe to the rest of the world. Aurōra () is the Latin word for dawn, and the goddess of dawn in Roman mythology and Latin poetry. Like Greek ''Eos'' and Rigvedic ''Ushas'', ''Aurōra'' continues the name of an earlier Indo-European dawn goddess, '' Hausos''. Name Aurōra stems from Proto-Italic ''*ausōs'', and ultimately from Proto-Indo-European ''*haéusōs'', the "dawn" conceived as divine entity. It has cognates in the goddesses Ēṓs, Uṣas, Aušrinė, Auseklis and Ēastre. Roman mythology In Roman mythology, Aurōra renews herself every morning and flies across the sky, announcing the arrival of the Sun. Her parentage was flexible: for Ovid, she could equally be ''Pallantis'', signifying the daughter of Pallas, or the daughter of Hyperion. Pierre Dumonstier II
Pierre Dumonstier II (1585–1656) was a French artist. Life His family produced several artists. The son of Étienne Dumonstier, Pierre was sometimes known as 'le neveu' (the nephew). He was one of at least five family members who specialised in chalk portrait drawings. Only ten drawings by him were catalogued by Louis Damier in his ''Histoire de la peinture de portrait en France au XVIe siècle''. Niccolò Arrighetti (11 November 1586, in Florence – 29 May 1639, in Florence) was Italian intellectual, pupil and associate of Galileo Galilei. Relationship with Galileo The son of Francesco Arrighetti and Fiammetta Ginori, as a young man he was a private student of Galileo’s, together with his cousin Andrea Arrighetti. Around 1614, Arrighetti assisted Galileo in replying to an attack by Giorgio Coresio on his views of the behaviour of bodies in water. Arrighetti maintained a close interest in Galileo’s experiments in physics and his mathematical work (notably on the flow of water in both straight and twisting channels). It was also Arrighetti who brought Galileo news from Benedetto Castelli about the dispute between Castelli and Cosimo Boscaglia, that prompted Galileo to write his '' Letter to Benedetto Castelli''. Michelangelo Buonarroti il Giovane (baptized 4 November 1568 – 11 January 1646) was a Florentine poet, librettist and man of letters, known as "the Younger" to distinguish him from his granduncle.
