Uruguay (; ), officially the Oriental Republic of Uruguay ( es, República Oriental del Uruguay), is a country in South America. It shares borders with Argentina to its west and southwest and Brazil to its north and northeast; while bordering the Río de la Plata to the south and the Atlantic Ocean to the southeast. Mariano Arana
Mariano Arana (born March 6, 1933, in Montevideo) is an Uruguayan architect and politician, former Minister of Housing, Spatial Planning and Environment of Uruguay and former mayor of Montevideo. Biography Son and grandson of Spanish immigrants, Arana attended the Lycée Français de Montevideo and is a graduate of the Faculty of Architecture of the University of the Republic. He was also teacher and Director of the Institute of History of Architecture, among the many other activities during college. He was founder of the Banda Oriental Editions and was chairman of the ''Comisión de Patrimonio Histórico, Artístico y Cultural de la Nación'' between 1985 and 1989. He has written numerous books, ranging from architecture to politics. An academy (Attic Greek: Ἀκαδήμεια; Koine Greek Ἀκαδημία) is an institution of secondary or tertiary higher learning (and generally also research or honorary membership). The name traces back to Plato's school of philosophy, founded approximately 385 BC at Akademia, a sanctuary of Athena, the goddess of wisdom and skill, north of Athens, Greece. Etymology The word comes from the ''Academy'' in ancient Greece, which derives from the Athenian hero, ''Akademos''. Outside the city walls of Athens, the gymnasium was made famous by Plato as a center of learning. The sacred space, dedicated to the goddess of wisdom, Athena, had formerly been an olive grove, hence the expression "the groves of Academe". Julio Vilamajó
Julio Vilamajó Echaniz (July 1, 1894 – April 12, 1948) was one of the best known Uruguayan architects. He was a member of the Board of Design Consultants for the construction of the United Nations headquarters together with Le Corbusier and Oscar Niemeyer. Childhood Vilamajó was born in Montevideo, Uruguay. He was the son of Ramón Vilamajó, a merchant born in Perpignan, France, and Eustaquia Echaniz, a native from San Sebastián in Spain. He was a pupil at School No. 24 in Montevideo from 1901–1903 and finished primary school at Colegio Sagrada Familia between 1904 and 1906. The Academia Nacional de Letras (English: "National Academy of Letters") is an association of academics and experts on the use of the Spanish language in Uruguay. It was founded in Montevideo on February 10, 1943. Among the first members were Cardinal Antonio María Barbieri, Emilio Frugoni, Juana de Ibarbourou, Emilio Oribe, Alberto Zum Felde.
