Aureliano De Beruete Y Moret
Aureliano de Beruete y Moret (1876, Madrid – 1922, Madrid) was an art critic and historian; son of the painter, Aureliano de Beruete. He served as Director of the Museo del Prado from 1918 until his death. Biography As the son of a Professor who was a founding member of the Institución Libre de Enseñanza, he grew up being educated according to the pedagogical principles of Krausism, as did many Spanish intellectuals of the time. He obtained his doctorate in philosophy and literature at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid, and soon began to publish articles on art in several Spanish and foreign magazines. His essays and monographs included general subjects, such as ''The School of Madrid'' (1909), and studies of individual artists, such as ''Valdés Leal'' (1911), ''Velázquez en el Museo del Prado'' (1915), and ''Goya, pintor de retratos'' (1916). Domḗnikos Theotokópoulos ( el, Δομήνικος Θεοτοκόπουλος ; 1 October 1541 7 April 1614), most widely known as El Greco ("The Greek"), was a Greek painter, sculptor and architect of the Spanish Renaissance. Alfonso XIII (17 May 1886 – 28 February 1941), also known as El Africano or the African, was King of Spain from 17 May 1886 to 14 April 1931, when the Second Spanish Republic was proclaimed. Diego Velázquez
Diego Rodríguez de Silva y Velázquez (baptized June 6, 1599August 6, 1660) was a Spanish painter, the leading artist in the court of King Philip IV of Spain and Portugal, and of the Spanish Golden Age. He was an individualistic artist of the Baroque period (c.1600–1750). He began to paint in a precise tenebrist style, later developing a freer manner characterized by bold brushwork. In addition to numerous renditions of scenes of historical and cultural significance, he painted scores of portraits of the Spanish royal family and commoners, culminating in his masterpiece ''Las Meninas'' (1656). Velázquez's paintings became a model for 19th-century realist and impressionist painters. Francisco Javier Sánchez Cantón
Francisco Javier Sánchez Cantón (1891–1971) was a Spanish art historian, who from 1960 to 1968 was Director of the Museo del Prado. Life Born in Pontevedra, Galicia (Spain), on 14 July 1891, in 1913 he obtained a doctorate from the Central University, Madrid, with a thesis on ''Los pintores de cámara de los reyes de España'' (published in 1916). He started work at the Museo del Prado the same year. He was also attached to the Centro de Estudios Históricos (now Instituto Diego Velázquez of the Spanish National Research Council), and was for some years the editor-in-chief of the journal '' Archivo Español de Arte''. In 1929 he curated an exhibition of the work of Anton Raphael Mengs at the Prado. During the Spanish Civil War he was active in conserving the Prado's collections.
