Augustus Stephenson
Sir Augustus Frederick William Keppel Stephenson, (18 October 1827 in London – 26 September 1904) was a Treasury Solicitor and the second person to hold the office of Director of Public Prosecutions in England and Wales. Early life and family Stephenson was born in London on 18 October 1827, the eldest child of Henry Frederick Stephenson, M.P., and Lady Mary Keppel. His mother was one of eleven children born to William Keppel, 4th Earl of Albemarle. His father, Henry Frederick Stephenson, was the illegitimate son of Charles Howard, 11th Duke of Norfolk. Henry Frederick Stephenson was a barrister-at-law and served as M.P. for Westbury (1831–49). His younger brother, Admiral Sir Henry Frederick Stephenson, was a Royal Navy officer, courtier and Arctic explorer. The Government Legal Department (previously called the Treasury Solicitor's Department) is the largest in-house legal organisation in the United Kingdom's Government Legal Service. The department is headed by the Treasury Solicitor. This office goes back several centuries. The office was enshrined in law by the Treasury Solicitor Act 1876, which established the Treasury Solicitor as a corporation sole (an office with perpetual succession). John Maule (barrister)
Sir John Blossett Maule, QC (1818–1889) was a British barrister who served as the first Director of Public Prosecutions for England and Wales. Life The second son of the Solicitor to the Treasury George Maule, Esquire, of London, Maule was educated at Westminster School and Christ Church, Oxford. Hamilton John Agmondesham Cuffe, 5th Earl of Desart, (30 August 1848 – 4 November 1934) was an Irish peer and barrister. Early life Cuffe was the second son of John Cuffe, 3rd Earl of Desart and his wife, Lady Elizabeth Campbell. He had an older sister, Lady Alice Mary Cuffe, and brother, William Cuffe, and a younger brother, Captain Otway Cuffe. John Gray (Queen's Proctor)
John Gray, QC (1807 – 22 January 1875) was a British lawyer and legal writer. The younger son of George Gray, he was born in Aberdeen where he was educated at Gordon's Hospital, before joining a firm of solicitors, Messrs White and Whitmore. He was called to the bar in 1838, four years after being admitted to the Middle Temple. He took silk in 1863 and was appointed Solicitor to the Treasury in 1871, serving until he died in 1875. Lord Arthur Somerset (1851–1926)
Major Lord Henry Arthur George Somerset DL (17 November 1851 – 26 May 1926) was the third son of the 8th Duke of Beaufort and his wife, the former Lady Georgiana Curzon. He was head of the stables of the future King Edward VII (then Prince of Wales) and a Major in the Royal Horse Guards. Lord Arthur Somerset was linked with the Cleveland Street scandal, in which he was identified and named by several male prostitutes as a customer of their services. He was interviewed by the police on 7 August 1889, and although the record of the interview has not survived, it resulted in a report being made by the Attorney-General, Solicitor-General and Director of Prosecutions urging that proceedings should be taken against him under section 11 of the Criminal Law Amendment Act 1885.
