Augustus S. F. X. Van Dusen
Professor Augustus S. F. X. Van Dusen, Ph.D., LL.D., F.R.S., M.D., M.D.S. is a fictional character in a series of detective short stories and a novel by Jacques Futrelle. Some of the short stories were originally published in ''The Saturday Evening Post'' and the ''Boston American''. Futrelle died at age 37 on April 15, 1912, on the RMS ''Titanic''. He refused to board a lifeboat, insisting that his wife board instead. Biography In the stories, Professor Van Dusen solves a variety of different mysteries with his friend and companion, Hutchinson Hatch, reporter of a fictional newspaper called ''The Daily New Yorker''. The professor is known as "The Thinking Machine", solving problems by the remorseless application of logic. This nickname was given to him after his winning of a match against the fictional chess champion of the day, Tschaikowsky, in a demonstration to show the power of applying pure logic. R. F. Keating's list of the 100 best crime and mystery books ever published. Science fiction and mystery author Harlan Ellison recalled that this story was his selection for "Lawrence Block's ''Best Mysteries of the Century''". While this story is in included in that anthology — as is a work by Ellison — it was actually edited by Tony Hillerman, not Block. Phillip Pine (July 16, 1920 – December 22, 2006) was an American film and television actor, writer, film director, and producer. Despite incorrect biographical information repeated on many entertainment sites, he was not related to Robert Pine or Chris Pine. In a career that spanned seven decades, Pine in 1955 portrayed the outlaw John Wesley Hardin in the ninth episode "John Wesley Hardin" of the ABC/Desilu Western television series, ''The Life and Legend of Wyatt Earp'', starring Hugh O'Brian in the title role. In a 1957 episode of the same series, Pine again played Hardin. Later that year, he appeared on ''Gunsmoke'', as “Vint” - a cheating card dealer turned murderer in the episode “Moon”. Claude Dauphin (actor)
Claude Dauphin (19 August 1903 – 16 November 1978) was a French actor. He appeared in more than 130 films between 1930 and 1978. Biography He was born in Corbeil-Essonnes, Essonne. His father was Maurice Étienne Legrand, a poet who wrote as Franc-Nohain, and who was the librettist for Maurice Ravel's opera ''L'heure espagnole''. His elder brother was the writer Jean Nohain. Dauphin's debut on film came in ''La Vagabonde'' (1930). He debuted on stage in ''Chapeau Chinois'' (1930) in Paris. Private life Dauphin married three times: first to Rosine Derean, then to the actress Maria Mauban with whom he had a child, Jean-Claude Dauphin, also an actor. Eventually, in 1955, Dauphin married American actress Norma Eberhardt. The couple divided their time between Paris, Los Angeles, New York City and Ocean Township, New Jersey.
