Augustus Pierce
Augustus F. Pierce ( 1877 – January 16, 1934) was an American politician who served as the Tammany Hall leader of the Bronx's 8th assembly district in New York City until his death in 1934. An employee of the city since 1907, at the time of his death he worked for the Department of Sanitation. Early life and family Augustus F. Pierce was born c. 1877 to Franklin and Jane Pierce (née McGinnis) in New York. In the 1910 United States Census he was listed as married to Loretta Pierce (b. 1888) and had an eight-year-old son; the family resided in Manhattan. Political career Pierce campaigned for John P. O'Brien in the 1933 mayoral election in the Bronx. Fiorello H. La Guardia, an enemy of Tammany Hall, won that election, which took place on November 7, but opponents of La Guardia still had a reasonable chance to block his measures in the Board of Aldermen. New York City Board Of Aldermen
The New York City Board of Aldermen was a body that was the upper house of New York City's Common Council from 1824 to 1875, the lower house of its Municipal Assembly upon consolidation in 1898 until the charter was amended in 1901 to abolish the Municipal Assembly and its upper house, and its unicameral legislature from 1875 to 1897 and 1902 to 1937. The corresponding lower house was known as the Board of Assistants or the Board of Assistant Aldermen from 1824 to 1875, while the upper house was known as the Council from 1898 to 1901. In 1938 a new charter came into effect that replaced the Board of Aldermen with the New York City Council. James Farley
James Aloysius Farley (May 30, 1888 – June 9, 1976) was an American politician and Knight of Malta who simultaneously served as chairman of the New York State Democratic Committee, chairman of the Democratic National Committee, and Postmaster General under President Franklin Roosevelt, whose gubernatorial and presidential campaigns were run by Farley. Farley was commonly referred to as a political kingmaker, as he was responsible for Roosevelt's rise to the presidency. He was the campaign manager for New York State politician Alfred E. Smith's 1922 gubernatorial campaign and Roosevelt's 1928 and 1930 gubernatorial campaigns as well as Roosevelt's presidential campaigns of 1932 and 1936. The City of Greater New York was the term used by many politicians and scholars for the expanded City of New York created on January 1, 1898, by consolidating the existing City of New York with Brooklyn, western Queens County, and Staten Island. The section of the Bronx west of the Bronx River had been annexed to the City and County of New York in 1874 and was known as the Annexed District. The section of the Bronx east of the Bronx River had been annexed to New York City, and New York County, in 1895. In the years leading up to consolidation, the City of Brooklyn had expanded by annexing all of the other towns and cities in Kings County. Only the western part of Queens County was part of the consolidation plan. In 1899, its three eastern towns separated to form the new Nassau County.
