Augusta Daily Gazette
The ''Augusta Daily Gazette'' was an American daily newspaper in Augusta, Kansas. It was owned by GateHouse Media. The paper covered several communities in suburban Butler County, Kansas, part of the Wichita metropolitan area. In addition to Augusta, the ''Gazette'' coverage area includes Andover, Douglass, Leon, Towanda and Rose Hill. GateHouse has since merged the Gazette with the ''Andover American'' and ''The El Dorado Times''. The new publication is called the ''Butler County Times-Gazette.'' Douglass, Kansas
Douglass is a city in Butler County, Kansas, United States. As of the 2020 census, the population of the city was 1,555. History 19th century The first settlement was made at Douglass in 1869. Douglass is named for its founder, Joseph W. Douglass, a storeowner who was fatally shot at the town site in 1873 while apprehending a suspected chicken thief. Douglass was incorporated as a city of the third class in 1879. In 1877, the Florence, El Dorado, and Walnut Valley Railroad Company built a branch line from Florence to El Dorado, in 1881 it was extended to Douglass, and later to Arkansas City. The line was leased and operated by the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway. The line from Florence to El Dorado was abandoned in 1942. ''The Butler County Times-Gazette'' is an American daily newspaper published in El Dorado, Kansas. It is owned by CherryRoad Media after being sold to the company from Gannett in 2021. The paper covers several communities in northern and eastern Butler County, Kansas, part of the Wichita metropolitan area. In addition to El Dorado, ''The Times-Gazette'' coverage area includes Benton, Leon, Potwin, Towanda and Whitewater. ''The Times-Gazette'' was founded in 1919 through the merger of two competing El Dorado dailies, the ''El Dorado Republican'' (founded May 5, 1885) and the ''Walnut Valley Times'' (founded March 4, 1870, daily since March 1, 1887). Rose Hill is a city in Butler County, Kansas, United States. As of the 2020 census, the population of the city was 4,185. History Early history For many millennia, the Great Plains of North America was inhabited by nomadic Native Americans. From the 16th century to 18th century, the Kingdom of France claimed ownership of large parts of North America. Towanda is a city in Butler County, Kansas, United States. As of the 2020 census, the population of the city was 1,447. History Towanda was established in 1870 and incorporated in 1905. Towanda is an Osage-language name meaning "big village". Andover is a city in Butler County, Kansas, United States, and a suburb of Wichita. As of the 2020 census, the population of the city was 14,892. Andover is the most populated city in Butler County. History 19th century When the Kansas territory was first mapped, the original Andover area was called Minneha. The Native American name was later changed to Cloud City.
