Augusta-Priolo
The petrochemical complex of Augusta-Priolo (called ''Polo petrolchimico siracusano'' in Italian) is a vast industrialized coastal area in eastern Sicily including the territory of the municipalities of Augusta, Priolo Gargallo and Melilli. Main industrial activities are oil refining, processing of oil derivatives and energy production. The complex, whose beginnings date back to 1949, has produced significant environmental problems for the coastline and the entire area, which accordingly is sometimes dubbed "Trinacria nera" (black Sicily or black triangle). Among the companies in the region are ExxonMobil, Sasol, ERG, Polimeri Europa and Syndial. Melilli
Melilli ( Sicilian: ''Miliddi'') is a ''comune'' (municipality) in the Province of Syracuse, Sicily (southern Italy), located about southeast of Palermo and about northwestern of Syracuse. Geography Melilli stands at about above sea level close to the Monti Climiti chain, overlooking the Megara bay and the industrial district of Augusta-Priolo. Melilli borders the following municipalities: Augusta, Carlentini, Priolo Gargallo, Syracuse, Sortino. History The human presence in the area is attested since the Bronze Age. Its strategic situation between the major cities of Augusta and Syracuse has played a critical role in its growth. In the feudal age, it became a dominion of the Augusta County. Port Of Augusta
Port of Augusta ( it, Porto di Augusta) is a port serving Augusta, Sicily. In 2007, 33.041 million tonnes passed through the port. History The natural port has been used since ancient times. It wasn't until the 1930s though that the Italian Navy developed the port and established an important military base to exercise control of the coast. The port was used by the Royal Navy during the war between Italy and Turkey for ten years, and during the landing in Sicily by the Allies the port was subjected to repeated raids. It was occupied by the British Navy from 1943 to 1946. Oil tycoon Angelo Moratti's oil refinery Rasiom Moratti was built in 1949, marking the beginning of its history as a large-scale industrial harbor, nowadays part of the petrochemical complex Augusta-Priolo. Angelo Moratti (5 November 1909 – 12 August 1981) was an Italian oil tycoon and the former owner of Inter Milan from 1955 to 1968. Biography In 1962, after a long history in the oil business, Moratti founded Saras S.p.A., an energy multinational corporation with operations in petroleum refining, marketing, transportation, and power generation. In 1955, he became the owner and chairman of Serie A football club Internazionale Milano F.C. Under his ownership and Helenio Herrera's coaching, Inter thrived, earning the nickname of ''Grande Inter'' for their national and international success.
