Spot-winged Antbird
The spot-winged antbird (''Myrmelastes leucostigma'') is a species of bird in the family Thamnophilidae. It is found in humid forest in the Amazon north of the Amazon River, and in the far western Amazon and adjacent lower east Andean slopes. The spot-winged antbird was described by the Austrian ornithologist August von Pelzeln in 1868 and given the binomial name ''Percnostola leucostigma''. The Roraiman, Humaita, brownish-headed and rufous-faced antbird were formerly considered as subspecies, but based on the differences in voice and plumage characteristics they are now treated as separate species. As presently defined, the spot-winged antbird includes the subspecies ''infuscata'', ''subplumbea'' and ''intensa''. Southern Africa is the southernmost subregion of the African continent, south of the Congo and Tanzania. Pohnpei Starling
The Pohnpei starling (''Aplonis pelzelni''), also known as Pohnpei mountain starling or Ponape mountain starling, is an extremely rare or possibly extinct bird from the family of starlings ( Sturnidae). It is (or was) endemic to the island of Pohnpei (Federated States of Micronesia) in the Pacific Ocean. It was called "sie" (''pronounced see-ah'') by the Pohnpei islanders. It was named after the Austrian ornithologist August von Pelzeln (1825–1891). Description The Pohnpei starling reached a size of 19 cm. It was generally dark with sooty brown upperparts. The head was darker and exhibit a black forehead and black lores. The wings, rump, uppertail coverts and tail were paler and showed a stronger brown coloring at the head. The underparts were washed olive brown. The bill and the feet were black. The iris was brown. The juveniles were similar to the adults except the upperparts of their plumage exhibited a paler brown. Otto Finsch
Friedrich Hermann Otto Finsch (8 August 1839, Warmbrunn – 31 January 1917, Braunschweig) was a German ethnographer, natural history, naturalist and colonial explorer. He is known for a two-volume monograph on the parrots of the world which earned him a doctorate. He also wrote on the people of New Guinea and was involved in plans for German colonization in Southeast Asia. Several species of bird (such as ''Oenanthe finschii'', ''Alophoixus finschii'', ''Psittacula finschii'') are named after him as also the town of Finschhafen in Morobe Province, Papua New Guinea and a crater on the moon. Biography Finsch was born at Cieplice Śląskie-Zdrój, Bad Warmbrunn in Silesia to Mortiz Finsch and Mathilde née Leder. His father was in the glass trade and he too trained as a glass painter. Gustav Hartlaub
Karel Johan Gustav Hartlaub (8 November 1814 – 29 November 1900) was a German physician and ornithologist. Hartlaub was born in Bremen, and studied at Bonn and Berlin before graduating in medicine at Göttingen. In 1840, he began to study and collect exotic birds, which he donated to the Bremen Natural History Museum. He described some of these species for the first time. In 1852, he set up a new journal with Jean Cabanis, the ''Journal für Ornithologie''. He wrote with Otto Finsch, ''Beitrag zur Fauna Centralpolynesiens: Ornithologie der Viti-, Samoa und Tonga- Inseln''. Halle, H. Schmidt. The New Zealand rock wren (''Xenicus gilviventris'') is a small New Zealand wren (family (biology), family Acanthisittidae) Endemism, endemic to the South Island of New Zealand. The yellow-margined flatbill or Zimmer's flatbill (''Tolmomyias assimilis'') is a species of bird in the tyrant flycatcher family Tyrannidae. It is found in humid forest in southern Central America, and the Chocó and Amazon in South America.
