August (1996 Film)
''August'' is a 1996 British drama film directed by and starring Anthony Hopkins as Ieuan (IPA:j/əɨ/a/n) Davies, and featuring Rhys Ifans in a small role in one of his earliest films, as Griffiths. It is an adaptation of Anton Chekhov's 1899 play ''Uncle Vanya'', with the character Ieuan Davies taking over the title role. The film was Hopkins's first feature film with a full cast (he had previously directed the one-man-performance of ''Dylan Thomas: Return Journey'' in 1990). It would be over a decade before his next directorial effort, ''Slipstream (2007 film), Slipstream'' in 2007, which he also wrote and for which he also composed the score. During an interview on late night show, The Ghost of Hollywood, cinematographer, Robin Vidgeon, stated that working with Anthony Hopkins on August was the highlight of his career. Sir Philip Anthony Hopkins (born 31 December 1937) is a Welsh actor, director, and producer. One of Britain's most recognisable and prolific actors, he is known for his performances on the screen and stage. Hopkins has received many accolades throughout his career, including two Academy Awards, three British Academy Film Awards, a British Academy Television Award, two Primetime Emmy Awards and a Laurence Olivier Award. He has also received an honorary Golden Globe Award and the BAFTA Fellowship for lifetime achievement from the British Academy of Film and Television Arts. In 1993, he was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II for his services to the arts, and in 2003, he received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for his achievements in the motion picture industry. ''Slipstream'' is a 2007 American film starring, written, scored, and directed by Anthony Hopkins, which explores the premise of a screenwriter who is caught in a slipstream of time, memories, fantasy and reality. The film co-stars and was produced by Hopkins' wife Stella Arroyave, who also plays his wife. The film premiered at the 2007 Sundance Film Festival. Cool Cymru ( cy, Cŵl Cymru) was a Welsh cultural movement in music and independent film in the 1990s and 2000s, led by the popularity of bands such as Stereophonics, Gorky's Zygotic Mynci, Manic Street Preachers, Catatonia and Super Furry Animals. Meibion Glyndŵr (, Sons of Glyndŵr) was a group linked to arson of English-owned holiday homes in Wales. They were formed in response to the housing crisis in Wales precipitated by large numbers of houses being bought by wealthy English people for use as holiday homes, pushing up house prices beyond the means of many locals. They were responsible for setting fire to English-owned holiday homes in Wales from 1979 to the mid-1990s. History The group first came to prominence in 1979 after the Welsh devolution referendum. In the first wave of attacks, eight English-owned holiday homes were destroyed within the space of a month. In 1980, Welsh Police carried out a series of raids in Operation Tân in an effort to find the culprits. Huw Garmon
Huw Garmon (born 1966) is a Welsh actor, probably best known for playing the eponymous lead in the Oscar-nominated Welsh language film ''Hedd Wyn'' (1992). He has also taken part in various television series and has currently taken an academic post at Glyndŵr University, combining it with his acting roles. Born in Llangefni in Anglesey, Garmon is the youngest of four sons of the Welsh historian and novelist Richard Cyril Hughes. He obtained a degree in drama studies from Aberystwyth University. Although he is best known for Welsh language roles, he has also appeared on English language television, notably in ''Cadfael'' with Derek Jacobi, as well as having parts in a number of films.
