Audra is a ghost town in Taylor County, Texas Taylor County is a county located in the U.S. state of Texas. As of the 2020 census, its population was 143,208. Its county seat is Abilene. The county was created in 1858 and later organized in 1878. It is named for Edward Taylor, George .... Established around the beginning of the 20th century, the town grew around a general store built by C. Meno Hunt, Fred Robinson, and Frank Sheppard. The town was named after Sheppard's daughter. In 1905, the population grew to a peak of around 75. However, in response to the construction of a railroad through the area, the town was abandoned and its residents founded the town of Bradshaw to the east. Taylor County is a county located in the U.S. state of Texas. As of the 2020 census, its population was 143,208. Its county seat is Abilene. The county was created in 1858 and later organized in 1878. It is named for Edward Taylor, George Taylor, and James Taylor, three brothers who died at the Battle of the Alamo. Taylor County is included in the Abilene, TX metropolitan statistical area, and is considered part of West Texas. History Among first inhabitants of the area were the Penteka. In 1849, Capt. Randolph Marcy, a U. S. Army engineer, passed through, scouting out West Texas-to-California routes. The Texas legislature established Taylor County in 1858 from Bexar and Travis Counties. The county is named for Alamo defenders Edward, James, and George Taylor. The Butterfield Overland Mail established the Mountain Pass Station at Merkel; it was in continual use until 1861. Bradshaw is a town in the southern part of Taylor County, Texas. It is located on U.S. Highway 83 and Farm Road 1086. History The town was founded when the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway The Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway , often referred to as the Santa Fe or AT&SF, was one of the larger railroads in the United States. The railroad was chartered in February 1859 to serve the cities of Atchison, Kansas, Atchison and Top ... was constructed near it in 1909 by residents of the nearby town of Audra who wished to reside closer to the railroad. Its population reached a peak of 450 in 1929 and slowly declined due to transportation systems better favoring the city of Abilene to the north. As of 2000, the city has a population of 61.
