Aubinadong-Nushatogaini Rivers Provincial Park
The Aubinadong-Nushatogaini Rivers Provincial Park is a provincial park in Algoma District, Ontario, Canada. It protects a network of rivers and lakes, in particular portions of the West Aubinadong and Nushatogaini Rivers, as well as a series of lakes extending south from the West Aubinadong-Nushatogaini confluence towards Ranger Lake, such as Saymo, Gong, Island, Mystery, and Friendly Lakes. As a waterway park, it includes a strip of land along both banks of the rivers and along the shores of the lakes. The Nushatogaini is a tributary of the West Aubinadong, which in turn drains in the Aubinadong River. These rivers are sandy bottom streams with some rocky whitewater sections. They form part of a major canoe camping route known as the Ranger North Canoe Loop. Algoma District
Algoma District is a district and census division in Northeastern Ontario in the Canadian province of Ontario. The name was created by an American ethnologist, Henry Rowe Schoolcraft (1793-1864), who was appointed Indian agent to the Ojibwe in Sault Ste. Marie region in 1822. "Al" is derived from Algonquin, while "goma" is a variant of gomee, meaning lake or water. Algoma District has shoreline along Lake Superior and Lake Huron. It has an international border crossing to the American state of Michigan, at Sault Ste. Marie. Historically, it was known for its lumber and mining industries. The rugged scenery of the region has inspired works by Canadian artists, particularly the Group of Seven. Aubinadong River
The Aubinadong River is a river in Sudbury and Algoma Districts, Ontario, Canada. It is a right tributary of the Mississagi River. Description The river springs in Whitehead Township, a geographic township in the northwestern part of Sudbury District. It flows in a mostly southerly direction through a variety of landscapes with high, rugged rock cliffs in the north, and flatter, lower lying areas in the south. It has generally wide, deep, slow-moving stretches interspersed by narrow channels of whitewater. Its dark water has a considerable amount of humic acid. The river forms part of a traditional indigenous canoe route, linking the interior with Lake Huron via the Mississagi River. It is still used for canoe camping as the main recreational activity. Canoe Camping
Canoe camping, also known as touring, tripping or expedition canoeing, is a combination of canoeing and camping. Like backpacking, canoe campers carry enough with them to travel and camp for several days, but do so via a canoe or kayak. Description A canoeist can transport significantly heavier and bulkier loads than a backpacker or even a kayaker can. Portage
Portage or portaging (Canada: ; ) is the practice of carrying water craft or cargo over land, either around an obstacle in a river, or between two bodies of water. A path where items are regularly carried between bodies of water is also called a ''portage.'' The term comes from French, where means "to carry," as in "portable". In Canada, the term "carrying-place" was sometimes used. Early French explorers in New France and French Louisiana encountered many rapids and cascades. The Native Americans carried their canoes over land to avoid river obstacles. Over time, important portages were sometimes provided with canals with locks, and even portage railways. Primitive portaging generally involves carrying the vessel and its contents across the portage in multiple trips. Goulais River Provincial Park
The Goulais River (Pronounced: goo-lee) is a river in northern Ontario, Canada, which rises in the Algoma highlands and empties into Goulais Bay on eastern Lake Superior near Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. It is one of the largest tributaries on the eastern lake, draining an area of approximately . The river and its tributaries were used to transport logs to local sawmills during the second half of the 19th century. The Algoma Central Railway travels up the river valley on its way to the Agawa canyon. At one time, the river was an important spawning area for lake sturgeon. However, logging operations, fishing and the installation of an electric barrier to prevent sea lampreys from travelling upstream (removed in 1960) have reduced sturgeon activity in the river.
