Attorney General Of Tennessee
The Tennessee Attorney General (officially, Attorney General and Reporter) is a position within the Tennessee state government. The Attorney General is the chief law enforcement officer and lawyer for Tennessee. The current office holder is Jonathan Skrmetti, who was appointed by the Tennessee Supreme Court for an eight-year term in 2022 to fill that position. His service officially began with his swearing in by Tennessee Governor Bill Lee, for whom he had previously served as chief legal counsel, on September 1, 2022. Appointment by judiciary Unlike any other state, the Tennessee Attorney General is an officer of the judicial branch, not the executive branch. Article VI Section 5 of the Tennessee Constitution provides for the appointment of the Attorney General by the justices of the Supreme Court for a term of 8 years. Jonathan Skrmetti
Jonathan Skrmetti (born 1977) is an American attorney and public official. He currently serves as the 28th Tennessee Attorney General, Attorney General and Reporter for the state of Tennessee. Education Skrmetti earned degrees from George Washington University and Hertford College, Oxford, Hertford College, Oxford. While earning his Juris Doctor from Harvard Law School, he served as the editor-in-chief of the Harvard Journal of Law & Public Policy. Career Skrmetti previously clerked for Steven Colloton, Judge Steven Colloton on the United States Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit, U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit. Charles Burson
Charles Wainman Burson (born August 28, 1944) is a former legal counsel and Chief of Staff to the Vice President of the United States under Al Gore. He assumed the position of legal counsel from Kumiki Gibson in February 1997 after serving almost a decade as Tennessee Attorney General. In 1999 Charles Burson became Gore's Chief of Staff, replacing Ron Klain who resigned in August of that year. Burson is the son of Josie Burson and Leo Burson. He grew up in Shelby County, Tennessee, where he graduated from Central High School in Memphis in 1962. Burson received his Bachelor of Arts in political science from the University of Michigan, his Master of Arts from the University of Cambridge, and his J.D. from Harvard Law School.
