Atsinanana Region
Atsinanana is a coastal region in eastern Madagascar. It borders Analanjirofo region in the north, Alaotra-Mangoro in the west, Vakinankaratra and Amoron'i Mania in the southwest, and Vatovavy and Fitovinany in south. The region contains over 285km of coastline, which includes many beaches and cultural heritage sites. Atsinanana is known for its fish breeding and fishing near its ports, ore claims and mining activity, as well as its agriculture. The capital of the region is Toamasina, and the population was 1,484,403 in 2018. The area of Atsinanana is , almost exactly the same as its neighbor, Analanjirofo. The current governor of Atsinanana is Richard Théodore Rafidison. Toamasina
Toamasina (), meaning "like salt" or "salty", unofficially and in French Tamatave, is the capital of the Atsinanana region on the east coast of Madagascar on the Indian Ocean. The city is the chief seaport of the country, situated northeast of its capital and biggest city Antananarivo. In 2018 Toamasina had a population of 325,857. History Under French rule, Toamasina was the seat of several foreign consuls, as well as of numerous French officials, and was the chief port for the capital and the interior. Vatomandry District
Vatomandry is a district located in Atsinanana Region, Madagascar. Etymology and location Located on the coast, the town's name means 'Sleeping Rocks', derived from two black rocks near the shore. It is also on the path of the Canal des Pangalanes and Route Nationale (RN) 11. History In the pre-colonial era of the 19th century, Vatomandry was a center of Hova government with an active port. Cyclone Manou caused great damage in 2003 to the town and left 68 people dead. Mangerivola Reserve
Mangerivola Special Reserve is a wildlife reserve in the east of Madagascar. It was established in 1958 and is a hotspot for bird-watchers due to the one hundred species found there, including 63 endemics and many local endemics. There are also seven species of lemur and rare chameleons such as the Lance-nosed chameleon ('' Calumma gallus'') which is registered as endangered on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Geography Mangerivola Special Reserve is a nature reserve in the Atsinanana region, to the west of Toamasina and south of Fito. The highest peak on the reserve is Mangerivola at and the landscape consists of hills, deep valleys, waterfalls (up to ) and lakes. Two of rivers ( Ambotohaka and Ivondro) provide water for the hydroelectric power at the Volobe dam, and along with the Marongolo, Ranomena and Sanalaotra rivers, irrigate the rice fields below the reserve and supply drinking water. Zahamena National Park
Zahamena National Park is a national park of Madagascar. Established in 1997, it covers an area of out of a total protected area of . It is part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Rainforests of the Atsinanana, inscribed in 2007 and consisting of 13 specific areas located within eight national parks in the eastern part of Madagascar. In 2001, Bird Life International assessed avifauna of 112 species of which 67 species are exclusively endemic to Madagascar. The park is habitat for 112 bird species, 46 reptile species, 62 species of amphibians and 48 species of mammals, including 13 species of lemurs. The ethnic groups inhabiting the area are mostly Betsimisaraka and Sihanak. Betampona Reserve
Betampona Reserve is a nature reserve in Toamasina Province of Madagascar. Analalava Special Reserve
Analalava is a coastal town and commune ( mg, kaominina) in north-western Madagascar over the Mozambique Channel. It is approximately 150 kilometres north of Mahajanga and some 430 kilometres north of the capital Antananarivo. It belongs to the district of Analalava, which is a part of Sofia Region. The population of the commune was estimated to be approximately 10,000 in 2001 commune census. Analalava is served by a local Analalava Airport. In addition to primary schooling the town offers secondary education at both junior and senior levels. The town has a permanent court and hospital. Ankeniheny-Zahamena Corridor
The Ankeniheny-Zahamena Corridor (CAZ) is a large area of protected forest biome in eastern Madagascar. The CAZ encompasses some 3,810 km, making it one of the largest areas of rainforest remaining in the country. Over 2,000 species of plants have been recorded in the CAZ, nearly 1,700 of which are endemic to the region. This area is the main source of water in the eastern and western part of Madagascar. It received the status of a natural resource reserve in 2015. Flora and fauna The CAZ is an area of enormous biodiversity: fifteen species of lemur have been recorded in it, at least three of which (the indri, the black-and-white ruffed lemur'','' and the diademed sifaka) are known to be threatened.
