Club Deportivo Atlético Balboa, commonly known as Atlético Balboa or simply Balboa, is a Salvadoran football club. The team play in La Unión, La Unión department. History Foundation The foundation of Atletico Balboa occurred in 1950 in La Union. Mauro "El Turco" Granados, Simón Reyes, Paulino Cáceres, Pablo Rubio, Rodolfo Guzmán, Carlos Villalta, Carlos Juárez, René Pantoja, Luis Ávila, Chico Osorio, Juan Guevara, Chico Ruíz and Timoteo Hernández were the original members of the team. The team was intended to be a baseball team, but it was changed to a football team. The club was named "Balboa" after the Panamanian balboa and its first match was played against the Honduran team América de Choluteca. The team's first colours were white with green diagonal stripes which were soon changed by the team's president Ricardo Flores to black and red. Club Deportivo Juventud Independiente, also commonly known as Juventud Independiente, is a professional Salvadoran football club, based in San Juan Opico, La Libertad, El Salvador. Founded on 7 September 1943, holding home matches at Complejo Municipal. The one time primera division side enjoyed its greatest successes in the 2010s, but following financial troubles and selling their spot to Luis Ángel Firpo, the club currently plays in the 4th division, Tercera División. History The beginning In 1940, Vicente Rocha a community leader, decided to begin an elaborate health project for the young people in his community of opico and realised quite quickly that forming a football club would help his cause. Eduardo Santana
Eduardo Santana (November 29, 1958 – October 19, 2023) was a Brazilian association football, football player and manager. He last coached C.D. Dragón in the Segunda División de Fútbol Salvadoreño of El Salvador. Playing career A midfielder, Santana played for several clubs in Guatemala Xelajú (1981–1983), Aurora (1984–85), Municipal (1988), Deportivo Suchitepéquez (1989), Escuintla (1991–92), and Juventud Retalteca (1993–1994). He scored 52 goals. Death On October 19, 2023, while coaching second division side Barillas FC, Santana suffered a heart attack and was pronounced dead. Luis Baltazar Ramírez Zapata (born 6 January 1954) is a retired Salvadoran footballer. Club career Nicknamed ''El Pelé'', he spent nearly 20 years playing for Salvadoran club Águila. He started with Águila, after being recommended by Brazilian technical director Arnaldo Da Silva, under the legendary Juan Francisco Barraza before leaving to join other clubs and later in his career make a return to the San Miguel based club. He also would go on to play for Atlético Marte and Alianza in his homeland El Salvador and spent time abroad playing for Cartaginés in Costa Rica, scoring 11 goals, and Puebla in Mexico. In 1990, he played for the Washington Diplomats of the American Professional Soccer League. International career Ramírez represented El Salvador at the 1975 Pan American Games in Mexico. Nelson Mauricio Ancheta Flores (born 30 July 1963 in Chalchuapa) is a former Salvadoran professional football player and currently manager. Copa El Salvador
The Copa El Salvador is the top knock-out football tournament in El Salvador. The first edition was played in 1999, resulting champion C.D. Águila of El Salvador. From 2000 to 2006, the competition was played two more times with Atlético Balboa and Once Municipal winning the cup. After a lengthy hiatus that began in 2006, was restored in 2016 The cup is currently sponsored by Claro and thus officially known as the Copa Claro. The Cup tournament is played as a separate tournament from the league (played between First, Second and Third Division). Format Change In 2014, the tournament was briefly brought back played between Águila and FAS. However, the cup turned out to be a one-off event.
