Atlanta Neighborhood Union
The Atlanta Neighborhood Union was an African-American, women-led neighborhood organization in Atlanta, Georgia, started in 1908 by Lugenia Burns Hope, and chartered in 1911. The Union, "a prototype for self-help and social service organizations," was one of the most important organizations for Atlanta's social services, and worked in part by networking with the city's progressive whites. One of the organizations influenced by it was the Women's Political Council, of Montgomery, Alabama. It was dissolved in the 1970s. History Foundation The Atlanta Neighborhood Union was founded by Lugenia Burns Hope, a social reformer and the wife of Morehouse College president John Hope. Lugenia Burns Hope
Lugenia Burns Hope (February 19, 1871 – August 14, 1947), was a social reformer whose Neighborhood Union and other community service organizations improved the quality of life for African Americans in Atlanta, Georgia, and served as a model for the future Civil Rights Movement. Biography Education and social outreach Lugenia Burns was born in St. Louis, Missouri, February 19, 1871. Her parents were Louisa M. Bertha and Ferdinand Burns; her father was a carpenter. She was the youngest of seven children. When her father died suddenly, her mother to move the family to Chicago. Throughout her youth, Lugenia Burns worked for various charitable organizations, inspiring a lifelong interest in social outreach work. Jacqueline Anne Rouse
Jacqueline Anne Rouse (1950-202'' was an American scholar of African Americans, African American women’s history. She is most widely known for her work on Southern black women and their activism from the turn of the twentieth century to the Civil Rights Movement. Biography Jacqueline A. Rouse earned a B.A. from Howard University in 1972 and an M.A. from Atlanta University in 1973. She then went on to doctoral study at Emory University, where she wrote a dissertation titled "Lugenia D. Burns Hope: A Black Female Reformer in the South, 1871-1947" under the direction of Dr. Darlene Rebecca Roth. Rouse completed her Ph.D. in 1983. She became a professor in the history department at Georgia State University in 1991, where she taught courses on African American history, black studies, and women’s studies.
