Athletics At The 2020 Summer Paralympics
Athletics at the 2020 Summer Paralympics were held in the National Stadium in Tokyo. There was 167 medal events: 93 for men, 73 for women and one mixed event. It was the largest contest of the Games programme regarding athlete numbers and medal events to be scheduled. The 2020 Summer Olympic and Paralympic Games were postponed to 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. They kept the 2020 name and were instead held from 24 August to 5 September 2021. Classification and events Participating athletes are given a classification depending on their disabilities (T denotes track events, F denotes field events). Olivia Breen
Olivia "Livvy" Breen (born 26 July 1996) is a Welsh Paralympian athlete, who competes for Wales and Great Britain mainly in T38 sprint and F38 long jump events. She qualified for the 2012 Summer Paralympics and was selected for the T38 100m and 200m sprint and was also part of the T35-38 women's relay team. She has also represented Wales at the 2014, 2018 and 2022 Commonwealth Games winning gold in the F38 Long Jump in 2018 and gold in the T37/38 100m in 2022 . Early life Breen was born in England to a Welsh mother and Irish father. Breen, who has cerebral palsy, began racing while still at primary school. Career Breen was given her T38 classification in January 2012, allowing her to be brought into contention for Paralympic selection. Marlene van Gansewinkel (born 11 March 1995) is a Dutch Paralympic athlete. In 2021, she won the gold medal in both the women's 100 metres T64 and 200 metres T64 events at the 2020 Summer Paralympics in Tokyo, Japan. Marie-Amélie Le Fur
Marie-Amélie Le Fur (; born 26 September 1988) is a French Paralympic athlete from Vendôme, Centre Region, competing in T44 sprint and F44 long jump events. Her left leg was amputated below the knee following a motor scooter accident in 2004. Before she lost her leg, she was a French junior running champion. Le Fur competed in the 2008 Summer Paralympics in Beijing, China. There she won a silver medal in the women's Long jump - F44 event, a silver medal in the women's 100 metres - T44 event, and finished eighth in the women's 200 metres - T44 event. Le Fur won gold in the T44 100m in London 2012 in a photo-finish, just ahead of Netherlands' Marlou van Rhijn and the USA's April Holmes. Fleur Jong (; born 17 December 1995) is a Dutch Paralympic athlete. She won the gold medal in the women's long jump T64 event at the 2020 Summer Paralympics held in Tokyo, Japan. Martina Caironi (born 13 September 1989) is an Italian Paralympic athlete. She competed at the 2012 Summer Paralympics and 2016 Summer Paralympics. She won a gold medal in the 100 m sprint in 2012 and a silver in the long jump in 2016. She qualified for the 2020 Summer Paralympics. Biography As a result of a motorcycle accident in 2007, Caironi had to undergo high- femoral amputation on her left leg. Disqualification On 17 October 2019, she was disqualified for having been found positive for a steroid contained in a healing ointment, prescribed by her doctor, to treat a severe inflammation of the amputated leg. Vanessa Low
Vanessa Low (born 17 July 1990) is a German-born Australian Paralympic athlete competing in T42 sprint and long jump events. Born in East Germany, she gained Australian nationality in June 2017. In 2016, Low was the only actively competing female track athlete with two above-knee amputations of her legs. Despite the location of these amputations and despite her having to compete with athletes having one fully functional leg, she successfully made it to the finals of all of her sprint and long jump competitions at both the 2012 Summer Paralympics in London and the 2016 Summer Paralympics in Rio. In Rio she won the gold medal with a 4.93m world record distance in the T42 long jump and a silver medal in the T42 100m competition.
