Athletics At The 2016 Summer Olympics – Men's Discus Throw
The men's discus throw competition at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, was held at the Estádio Olímpico João Havelange on 12–13 August. Thirty-five athletes from 24 nations competed. Germany's Christoph Harting succeeded his brother Robert Harting to the Olympic title. "It was the first time in Olympic history, in any sport, that brothers succeeded each other as Olympic champions in the same individual event." It was also the nation's third victory in the event (excluding those won by East and West Germany). Poland's Piotr Małachowski took the silver medal ahead of another German, Daniel Jasinski. Małachowski had also won silver eight years before, making him the 16th man to win multiple medals in the discus throw. 2015 World Championships In Athletics – Men's Discus Throw
The men's discus throw at the 2015 World Championships in Athletics was held at the Beijing National Stadium on 27 and 29 August. Three time defending champion Robert Harting and his exuberant celebrations would not be here due to knee surgery, opening up opportunities for others. Returning silver medalist Piotr Małachowski is the world leader hoping to move up a notch. In the trials, it took Fedrick Dacres one toss to make an automatic qualifier, Małachowski took three attempts to do, but nobody else could get there. In the finals, Małachowski took the lead on the second throw of the competition with a 65.09, the next thrower was Dacres who put out a 64.22. Virgilijus Alekna (; 13 February 1972) is a Lithuanian former discus thrower and politician. He won medals at the 2000, 2004 and 2008 Olympics, including two golds. After retiring from athletics, Alekna was elected to the national parliament, the Seimas, in 2016. He has 3 children - Martynas Alekna, Mykolas Alekna and Gabrielė Aleknaite. Jürgen Schult (, ; born 11 May 1960) is a German former track and field athlete and, as of September 2021, the world record holder in the discus. Dating from 1986, this is the longest-standing record in men's track and field. Schult represented East Germany in the 1988 Olympic discus competition, where he won the gold medal. Martin Kupper (born 31 May 1989, in Tallinn) is an Estonian track and field athlete who competes in the discus throw. He has a personal best of , set in 2015. Lukas Weißhaidinger (born 20 February 1992) is an Austrian discus thrower and shot putter. He was European junior discus champion in 2011 and holds the Austrian record in men's discus throw. He won bronze medals at the 2018 European Championships, 2019 World Athletics Championships, and 2020 Summer Olympics. Career In his childhood Weißhaidinger competed in gymnastics, but dropped that sport after growing too tall and concentrated on athletics. Fedrick Dacres (born 28 February 1994) is a Jamaican discus thrower. He began his throwing career as a student at Calabar High School in Jamaica along with other accomplished throwers such as Chad Wright and Traves Smikle, under the guidance of former Calabar athlete coach Julian Robinson. He won a gold medal at the 2011 World Youth Championships in Athletics, becoming the first Jamaican discus thrower ever to do so. He went on to win a gold medal at the 2012 World Junior Championships in Athletics, also becoming the first Jamaican discus thrower ever to do so.
