These are the official results of the men's 4 × 400 metres relay event at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, United States. There were 35 nations competing. United States ran the event without their top two qualifiers from the Olympic Trials. world record holder Butch Reynolds was injured before the games and 400 meters gold medalist Michael Johnson was injured during his 200 metres 19.32 world record. Seizing the opportunity of a weakened US squad, Britain's Iwan Thomas shot out to a lead from the gun putting a big gap on USA's Lamont Smith to his inside. Reality set in and Thomas began to tie up toward the end of his leg, allowing Smith to gain back to almost even with Thomas by the handoff, with Michael McDonald putting Jamaica into third position. Anthuan Maybank
Anthuan Maybank (born December 30, 1969) is a retired 1996 Olympic Games gold medalist in the men's 4x400 meter relay for the United States. Maybank ran the last leg for the United States and shrugged off an attack from Roger Black (UK) who had won a silver medal in the individual event. Maybank was not a well-known athlete at the time. But, a few weeks later, he confirmed his talent by winning the 400 m race at the prestigious meeting in Zurich. Anthuan was born in Georgetown, South Carolina. He was coached by "Sweet" Freddie Young at Georgetown High where he set the current state record in the 400 m (46.67), He attended the University of Iowa on a full athletic scholarship. He currently resides in Delaware and is the sprint coach for the Tatnall School. Andrew Valmon
Andrew Orlando Valmon (born January 1, 1965) is an American former 400 meters runner. Valmon was born in Brooklyn, New York, and raised in Manchester Township, New Jersey, where he attended Manchester Township High School. He attended college at Seton Hall University and graduated in 1987 with a degree in communications. Valmon won the silver medal at the World Indoor Athletics Championships in 1991 in Seville. In 1992 he won a gold medal with the American 4 × 400 m relay team at the Olympic Games in Barcelona. The same year, Valmon set his personal best of 44.28 seconds. He is now the track & field head coach at the University of Maryland, and coaches a summer camp at the university. He is married to Meredith Rainey, who is also an Olympic runner. Michael Johnson (athlete)
Michael Duane Johnson (born September 13, 1967) is an American retired sprinter who won four Olympic gold medals and 8 World Championships gold medals in the span of his career. He formerly held the world and Olympic records in the 200 m and 400 m, as well as the world record in the indoor 400 m. He also once held the world's best time in the 300 m. Johnson is generally considered one of the greatest and most consistent sprinters in the history of track and field. Dennis Anthony Blake (born 6 September 1970 in Saint Elizabeth Parish) is a retired male sprinter from Jamaica. He is a two-time Olympian, winning the bronze medal at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, Georgia, where he ran in the qualifying heats. Career Blake was awarded a two-year scholarship to attend Blinn Junior College, in Texas. Having gained recognition for his athletic performances, he was awarded thirty-nine athletic scholarships to attend universities throughout the United States, including Alabama A&M University, his alma mater. Du'aine Ladejo (born 14 February 1971, in Paddington, London, England) is an English-born athlete and television personality. In his sports career, he was best known for winning the 400 metres sprint gold medal at the 1994 European Championships and being a member of the United Kingdom and England 400-metre relay squads at the European Championships, Olympics and Commonwealth Games during the 1990s. Mark David Hylton (born 24 September 1976) is a former British 400 metres sprinter. Hylton won a silver medal in the relay at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta.
