Athletics At The 1980 Summer Olympics – Men's Discus Throw
The men's discus throw event at the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow, Soviet Union had an entry list of 18 competitors from 12 nations, with one qualifying group and the final (12) held on Monday July 28, 1980. The maximum number of athletes per nation had been set at 3 since the 1930 Olympic Congress. The event was won by Viktor Rashchupkin of the Soviet Union, the nation's first medal and first victory in the men's discus throw. Imrich Bugár put Czechoslovakia back on the podium in the event after a one-Games absence, taking silver. Luis Delís earned Cuba's first men's discus throw medal with his bronze. The United States, which had earned at least one medal in every appearance of the event prior to 1980, missed the podium due to the boycott. Markku Tuokko
Markku Tuokko (24 June 1951 – 20 February 2015) was a Finnish discus thrower, shot putter and teacher. At the 1978 European Championships, Tuokko won the silver medal in discus with a result of 64.90 metres. At the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow, he finished ninth. In Montreal 1976 he didn't make it past the qualifying round. At the 1979 European Indoor Championships, he was fourth in shot put. He won the Finnish discus throw championship five times (1977 and 1979–1982). His personal best in discus throw was 68.12 metres, achieved in May 1979 in Fresno. It remained the Finnish record until 2001, when Timo Tompuri threw 69.62 m. In shot put his personal best of 20.03 metres, which he threw in August 1979, earned him entrance in the 20 meter club. In a European Cup contest in 1977, Tuokko tested positive for doping, along with fellow Finns high jumper Asko Pesonen and javelin thrower Seppo Hovinen. Kenth Gardenkrans
Kenth Roland Gardenkrans (born October 2, 1955, in Helsingborg, Skåne, Sweden) is a Swedish discus thrower. He represented Sweden at the 1980 Olympics. He competed for Mölndal AIK . Gardenkrans won the 1980 and 81 Swedish championship in discus. While at Brigham Young University he won the 1978 NCAA Championships and was an All American. In 1974 he set the World Junior Record, twice, ending up with 62.04. He finished second at the 1973 European Athletics Junior Championships behind future world record holder Wolfgang Schmidt. Knee injuries curtailed his later career. In 2011, he was hired as the throwing coach for Qatar. But he soon packed his bags and returned to Sweden when he learned he was expected to train Ahmed Mohammed Dheeb who was already on a 2-year doping suspension. Yuriy Eduardovich Dumchev (russian: Юрий Эдуардович Думчев; 5 August 1958 – 10 February 2016) was a Russian track and field athlete for the Soviet Union, who set the world record in the men's discus throw on 29 May 1983 with a distance of 71.86 metres. He was born in Rossosh. That mark, surpassed by current record-holder Jürgen Schult in July 1986, is still the world record.
