Micheline Ostermeyer
Micheline Ostermeyer (23 December 1922 – 17 October 2001) was a French athlete and concert pianist. She won three medals at the 1948 Summer Olympics in shot put, discus throw, and high jump. After retiring from sports in 1950, she became a full-time pianist for fifteen years and then turned to teaching afterwards. Biography A great-niece of the French author Victor Hugo and a niece of the composer Lucien Laroche, Ostermeyer was born in Rang-du-Fliers, Pas-de-Calais. At the insistence of her mother, she began learning piano at the age of 4, and at 14 she left her family's home in Tunisia to attend the Conservatoire de Paris. After the outbreak of World War II, she moved back to Tunisia where she performed a weekly half-hour piano recital on Radio Tunis. It was during her return stay in Tunisia that Ostermeyer began participating in sports, competing in basketball and track and field events. Gabre Gabric
Ljubica Gabrić-Calvesi (17 October 1914 – 16 December 2015), known as Gabre Gabric, was an Italian track and field athlete who competed in the 1936 Summer Olympics and in the 1948 Summer Olympics. Her best discus throw was 43.35 m (1939). Biography Ljubica Gabrić was born in Imotski, Croatia (then part of Austria-Hungary). She was wife of Sandro Calvesi, an Italian athletic coach (hurdles), and mother-in-law of Eddy Ottoz (grandmother of Laurent Ottoz and Patrick Ottoz). Dorothy Dodson
Dorothy Lucille Dodson (March 28, 1919 – June 24, 2003) was a distinguished American track and field athlete whose career spanned the late 1930s through late 1940s; Dodson's specialty was the throwing events. From 1939 to 1949—with the exception of 1940—Dodson participated in every U.S. AAU Outdoor National Championships. Born in Chicago, Illinois, Dodson won 11 consecutive National Championships in the javelin throw, 1939–49. She also won national titles in the shot put in 1944, 1946, and 1947; adding a national championship in the discus throw at the 1946 AAU Meet. Dodson was also the gold medalist in the shot put at the U.S. AAU Indoor Championships in 1941, 1945, and 1946. Bevis Reid
Bevis Shergold (née Reid, 13 June 1919 - 4 July 1997) was a British track and field athlete who competed in the 1938 European Athletics Championships and the 1948 Summer Olympics. Reid was a member of the Mitcham Athletics Club in London. By the time she was 19 years old she had unofficially broken the British record in the discus and the javelin. She competed in both the shot put and the discus at the 1938 European Athletics Championships held in Vienna, finishing in fifth place in the shot put and eighth place in the discus. Due to the war Reid had to wait ten years before she could compete in the Summer Olympics, where she threw 35.84 metres in the discus and finished in 14th place. She fared better in the shot put, finishing in third place in the qualifying round, but could only throw 12.170 metres in the final to finish in eighth place. Gudrun Eivor Elisabeth Arenander (née Eklund, 25 March 1921 – 28 August 2020) was a Swedish discus thrower. Frances Kaszubski
Frances Theresa Kaszubski (née Gorn-Sobczak) (May 15, 1916 Donora, Pennsylvania - April 11, 2010 Berea, Ohio) was an American born, Polish track and field athlete known for her participation in weight throwing, discus and shot put. During World War II she officially represented Poland, but competed primarily in the United States. A contemporary on her Polish Women's Olympic Club at the time in Cleveland, was Stanisława Walasiewicz who also represented Poland. After her marriage and after the war she chose to represent the United States, as did Walasiewicz, who changed her name to Stella Walsh. Standing , she was a giant of her sport.
