Athletics Cook Islands
Athletics Cook Islands Inc. (ACI) is the governing body for the sport of athletics in the Cook Islands. History ACI was founded as Cook Islands Amateur Athletics Association by Percy Henderson in 1962, and was affiliated to the IAAF in the year 1966. In 1979, Hugh Ngamata Henry was elected president. Later, Anne Tierney served as president. Current president is Erin Tierney. Athletics (sport)
Athletics is a group of sporting events that involves competitive running, jumping, throwing, and walking. The most common types of athletics competitions are track and field, road running, cross country running, and racewalking. The results of racing events are decided by finishing position (or time, where measured), while the jumps and throws are won by the athlete that achieves the highest or furthest measurement from a series of attempts. The simplicity of the competitions, and the lack of a need for expensive equipment, makes athletics one of the most common types of sports in the world. Athletics is mostly an individual sport, with the exception of relay races and competitions which combine athletes' performances for a team score, such as cross country. Organized athletics are traced back to the Ancient Olympic Games from 776 BC. Cook Islands Sports and National Olympic Committee (CISNOC) (IOC code: COK) is the governing body for sports in Cook Islands and its National Olympic Committee. Originally founded in 1943 as the Rarotonga Sports Association, the organisation became the Cook Islands Sports Association in 1960. In 1986 it was recognised by the International Olympic Committee and changed its name to the Cook Islands Sports & Olympic Association (CISOA). In 2002 it changed its name to the Cook Islands Sports & National Olympic Committee. In 1992 when Lotto was introduced to the Cook Islands, it was used to fund CISOA, with 35% of sales going to the organisation. Percy Elmo Henderson (1879 – 16 January 1934) was a Canadian first-class cricketer. Henderson was born in Canada in 1879.
