The women's high jump event at the 1999 Pan American Games was held on July 30. Juana Arrendel of the Dominican Republic had originally won the competition with a 1.93 metres jump but later tested positive for an illegal substance, stanozolol, and was stripped of her medal. High Jump
The high jump is a track and field event in which competitors must jump unaided over a horizontal bar placed at measured heights without dislodging it. In its modern, most-practiced format, a bar is placed between two standards with a crash mat for landing. Since ancient times, competitors have introduced increasingly effective techniques to arrive at the current form, and the current universally preferred method is the Fosbury Flop, in which athletes run towards the bar and leap head first with their back to the bar. The discipline is, alongside the pole vault, one of two vertical clearance events in the Olympic athletics program. It is contested at the World Championships in Athletics and the World Athletics Indoor Championships, and is a common occurrence at track and field meets. The high jump was among the first events deemed acceptable for women, having been held at the 1928 Olympic Games. The athletics competition at the 1999 Pan American Games was held at University Stadium in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. Two new events were introduced for women: pole vault and hammer throw. In addition the 20 km road walk replaced the 10,000 m track walk. Juana Arrendel
Juana Rosario Arrendel (born 16 June 1978 in La Romana) is a female high jumper from the Dominican Republic. Arrendel originally won the 1999 Pan American Games in Winnipeg, but lost the gold medal after testing positive for stanozolol. In 2006, she became the sixth woman to win three Central American and Caribbean Games titles in a row. The other are Miguelina Cobián, Carmen Romero, Bárbara Hechevarría, María Caridad Colón and Letitia Vriesde. Stanozolol
Stanozolol (Abbreviation, abbrev. Stz), sold under many brand names, is an androgen and anabolic steroid (AAS) medication derived from dihydrotestosterone (DHT). It is used to treat hereditary angioedema. It was developed by American pharmaceutical company Sterling Drug, Winthrop Laboratories (Sterling Drug) in 1962, and has been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for human use, though it is no longer marketed in the USA. It is also used in veterinary medicine. Stanozolol has mostly been discontinued, and remains available in only a few countries. It is given Oral administration, by mouth in humans or by Intramuscular injection, injection into muscle in animals. Solange Marilú Witteveen (born 6 February 1976) is a retired Argentine high jumper. She won a gold medal at the 1999 Pan American Games. She also represented Argentina at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney and the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens. Career Witteveen was born in Buenos Aires. Her personal best jump is 1.96 metres, achieved in September 1997 in Oristano. This is the current South American record. Among her achievements, Witteveen won the 1997 South American Championships, the 1998 South American Games and the 1999 Pan American Games, as well as winning a bronze medal at the 1999 Summer Universiade. In both of her appearances at the Olympic Games, she cleared 1.89 m, finishing 20th overall in 2000 and 23rd in 2004.
