Athletics At The 1993 Summer Universiade
At the 1993 Summer Universiade, the athletics events were held at the University at Buffalo Stadium in Amherst, New York in the United States from July 14 to 18. A total of 43 events were contested, of which 23 by male and 20 by female athletes. Variable and windy conditions meant that performances were lower compared to previous years. However, two Universiade records were broken during the competition; Kenya's Kennedy Manyisa improved the men's marathon time and Robert Korzeniowski of Poland bettered the 20 km walk standard. Bryan Bridgewater (born September 7, 1970) is an American former sprinter. Bridgewater started running for the West Valley Eagles youth club and Washington High School in Los Angeles. On the youth club he ran with Quincy Watts, but turned into a crosstown high school rival. Glenroy John Gilbert (born August 31, 1967 in Trinidad & Tobago) is a Canadian former track and field athlete, winner of the gold medal in 4×100 metres relay at the 1996 Summer Olympics, and head coach of Athletics Canada. Samuel Jefferson (April 19, 1971 – January 20, 2001) was an American sprinter. A native of Waco, Texas, Jefferson attended Waco High School and was a track and field athlete for the University of Houston. He claimed the 100 and 200 meter sprint double at the 1993 Southwest Conference Championships and was the outdoor 100 meters champion at the 1994 NCAA Division I Championships. Jefferson won the 100 meters silver medal at the 1993 University Games in Buffalo, behind Daniel Effiong. Daniel Effiong (born 17 June 1972 in Calabar) is a retired male sprinter from Nigeria. He became African 100 metres and Universiade champion in 1993. Together with Innocent Asonze, Francis Obikwelu and Deji Aliu he won a bronze medal in 4 x 100 metres relay at the 1999 World Championships, but the team was later disqualified (in August 2005) because Innocent Asonze failed a doping test in June 1999. Khalid Khannouchi
Khalid Khannouchi ( ar, خالد خنّوشي) (born September 12, 1971) is a retired American marathoner. He was born in Meknes, Morocco. He is the former world record holder for the marathon and held the former road world best for the 20 km distance. He is one of only five men to break the marathon world record more than once, and one of only five to break their own marathon world record (the others are Jim Peters, Derek Clayton, Eliud Kipchoge, and Haile Gebrselassie).
