Athletics At The 1992 Summer Olympics – Men's Triple Jump
The final of the men's triple jump event at the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona, Spain was held on August 3, 1992. There were 47 participating athletes from 32 nations, with two qualifying groups. The maximum number of athletes per nation had been set at 3 since the 1930 Olympic Congress. Mike Conley Sr. set a new Olympic record with 17.63 m. He also jumped 18.17 m which would also improve the standing world record, but this jump had wind assistance 2.1 m/s. The top twelve and ties, and all those reaching 17.00 metres advanced to the final. The qualification round was held on August 1, 1992. Conley's gold was the United States's fifth victory in the men's triple jump, surpassing the Soviet Union's four. Conley was the 11th man to win two medals in the event, and the first to do so in non-consecutive Games. Frank Rutherford's bronze was the first medal for the Bahamas in the event. Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys (, formerly known as the Estadi Olímpic de Montjuïc and Estadio de Montjuic) is a stadium in Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain. Willie Banks
William Augustus Banks III (born March 11, 1956) is an American athlete. Born at Travis Air Force Base, California, he grew up in San Diego County and went to Oceanside High School. Banks is an Eagle Scout. Track and Field Banks was a track & field athlete competing in the triple jump. On June 16, 1985 he set a world record of 17.97 m (58 feet 11.5 inches) at the national championships in Indianapolis, Indiana, USA. He finished second in the NCAA Championships in 1977 and 1978. He earned his B.A. and Juris Doctor (J.D.) from UCLA. He broke the American triple jump record in 1981. He qualified for the 1980 U.S. Olympic team but did not compete due to the U.S. Olympic Committee's boycott of the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow, Russia. He was one of 461 athletes to receive a Congressional Gold Medal instead. Māris Bružiks (born 25 August 1962 in Pļaviņas, Latvia) is a retired triple jumper who represented the USSR, and later, following its dissolution, Latvia. He first won the European Athletics Indoor Championships in 1986, setting a championship record (CR) with 17.54 metres. The record still stands, having been equalled by Christian Olsson in 2002. Brian Wellman
Brian Wellman (born September 8, 1967) is a former triple jumper from Bermuda, who became indoor world champion in 1995, setting a new championship record (CR) of 17.72. His personal best outdoors was 17.62 metres. Both these marks are Bermudian records. In addition, he has a wind-assisted (+7.1 m/s) mark of 17.75 metres. Pierre Camara (born 15 September 1965) is a retired French triple jumper, best known for his triple jump gold medal at the 1993 World Indoor Championships. In the triple jump final of those championships, he jumped 17.59 m, which was a new championship record and a new French indoor record.
