Athletics At The 1932 Summer Olympics – Men's High Jump
The men's high jump event at the 1932 Olympic Games took place July 31. It was a final only format, no heats or qualifying jumps. Fourteen athletes from 10 nations competed. The 1930 Olympic Congress in Berlin had reduced the limit from 4 athletes per NOC to 3 athletes.Official Report, p. 377. The event was won by Duncan McNaughton of Canada, breaking the United States' dominance over the event; McNaughton was the first non-American to win. Bob Van Osdel of the United States took silver, while Simeon Toribio earned the Philippines' first medal in any track & field athletics event. Background This was the ninth appearance of the event, which is one of 12 athletics events to have been held at every Summer Olympics. Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum
The Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum (also known as the L.A. Coliseum) is a multi-purpose stadium in the Exposition Park neighborhood of Los Angeles, California. Athletics At The 1932 Summer Olympics
At the 1932 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, 29 athletics events were contested. It was the first time the 50 kilometres race walk appeared in the athletic program at the Games. This was the second time women's events in athletics were included in the Olympic Games program and the first time that women competed in the javelin throw and 80m hurdles at the Olympics. There was a total of 386 participants from 34 countries competing. The athletics events took place at Los Angeles Olympic Stadium, now the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. Jerzy Pławczyk (16 April 1911 – 16 January 2005) was a Polish athlete who competed at 1932 and 1936 Summer Olympics. Biography In 1932 in Los Angeles, he competed in the men's high jump event, where he placed joint-seventh out of fourteen competitors with a top height of 1.90m. In 1936 in Berlin he placed twenty-second and last in the same event with a height of 1.80m. He also finished ninth out of twenty-eight competitors in the decathlon event and set his personal best score. He was born in Dąbrowa Górnicza and was a member of the AZS Warszawa club. A 1932 graduate of the Central Institute of Physical Education in Warsaw, that same year Pławczyk became the European champion in the high jump with a height of 1.96m, having already been a three-time national record holder in the event. Cornelius Cooper "Corny" Johnson (August 28, 1913 – February 15, 1946) was an American athlete in the high jump. Born in Los Angeles in 1913, Johnson first competed in organized track and field events at Berendo Junior High School. He achieved greater athletic success as a student at Los Angeles High School, competing in the sprint and in the high jump. Before going to the Olympics as a junior, he won the CIF California State Meet in 1932. He had been second the year before. In 2016, the 1936 Olympic journey of the eighteen Black American athletes, including Johnson, was documented in the film ''Olympic Pride, American Prejudice''.
