Atco Dragway
Atco Dragway' is a 1/4 mile dragstrip located in the Atco section of Waterford Township, New Jersey. History Built in 1959, The first racers (Motor Masters hot rod club ) started at the top end racing towards the starting line. They then helped open the track on Mermorial day weekend 1960 as the official opening date. Officially Opened Memorial Day weekend 1960, it is the oldest drag strip in New Jersey. The track is also sanctioned by the NHRA, the largest sanctioning body in drag racing. Atco Dragway held over 265 events last year, making it one of the busiest tracks in the country. Dragstrip
A dragstrip is a facility for conducting automobile and motorcycle acceleration events such as drag racing. Although a quarter mile (1320 feet, 402 m) is the best known measure for a drag track, many tracks are eighth mile (201 m) tracks, and the premiere classes will run 1,000 foot (304.8 m) races. The race is begun from a standing start which allows three factors to affect the outcome of the race: reaction time, power/weight ratio, and traction. Features A dragstrip is a straight, purpose-built racetrack, typically an eighth, ten feet longer than three-sixteenths, or a quarter of a mile long (660/1,000/1320 feet, 201/304.8/402 m), with an additional ''shutdown area'' to allow vehicles room to stop after crossing the finish line. Waterford Township, New Jersey
Waterford Township is a township in Camden County, New Jersey. As of the 2010 United States Census, the township's population was 10,649. reflecting an increase of 155 (+1.5%) from the 10,494 counted in the 2000 census. Waterford Township was originally created by Royal charter on June 1, 1695, while the area was still part of Gloucester County. The township was incorporated by an act of the New Jersey Legislature on February 21, 1798. On March 13, 1844, Waterford Township became one of the original townships in the newly created Camden County. The National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) is a drag racing governing body, which sets rules in drag racing and hosts events all over the United States and Canada. With over 40,000 drivers in its rosters, the NHRA claims to be the largest motorsports sanctioning body in the world. The association was founded by Wally Parks in 1951 in California to provide a governing body to organize and promote the sport of drag racing. NHRA's first Nationals was held in 1955, in Great Bend, Kansas. Old Bridge Township Raceway Park, originally known as Madison Township Raceway Park, is an American auto racing facility located in Old Bridge Township, in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States, (with an Englishtown ZIP code). History Raceway Park was founded in 1965 by Vincent Napoliello and Louis Napoliello. The site was originally 308 acres on 230 Pension Road, just off of County Route 527 (now Englishtown Road). A dragster is a specialized competition automobile used in drag racing. Dragsters, also commonly called "diggers", can be broadly placed in three categories, based on the fuel they use: gasoline, methanol, and nitromethane. They are most commonly single-engined, though twin-engined and quad-engined designs did race in the 1950s and 1960s.
