Ataklti Haile Selassie
Ataklti Haile Selassie (also ''Atakilty'', ''Haileselassie'', ''Haileselasie'', ''Hailesellassie'') is an Ethiopian who was appointed mayor of Mekelle following the Mekelle offensive of the November 2020 Tigray War. He resigned from the mayorship on 30 March 2021. Academia In mid-2020, Ataklti was Corporate Communications Director at Mekelle University. Politics Ataklti was one among six independent candidates in the 2020 Tigray regional election who withdrew their candidatures in the election. He stated that his candidature was based on the assumption of free air time on regional media and coverage of printing costs by the regional electoral commission. Ataklti argued that COVID-19 pandemic restrictions prevented door-to-door campaigns, so without radio, television or print access to campaigning, he had no chance to present his electoral platform to voters. Mekelle
Mekelle ( ti, መቐለ, am, መቀሌ, mäqälle, mek’elē) or Mekele is a List of zones of Ethiopia, special zone and capital city, capital of the Tigray Region of Ethiopia. Mekelle was formerly the capital of Enderta province, Enderta Awrajja, awraja in Tigray Province, Tigray. It is located around north of the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa, with an elevation of above sea level. Administratively, Mekelle is considered a Special Zone, which is divided into seven sub-cities. Mekelle Offensive (2020)
The Mekelle offensive was a military campaign fought between the armed forces of Ethiopia and the Tigray Region to reach the city of Mekelle in the Tigray Region, from 17 November to 28 November 2020. It was part of the Tigray War. Timeline 17 November Mekelle was hit by an airstrike, killing two civilians and injuring several others. The strike also caused damage to roads, bridges and houses. Who carried out the airstrike has been disputed, as the Ethiopian government has denied targeting civilians. Mortar fire and tank shells also fired upon civilian areas in the town of Shire; hotels, schools, a university campus, an apartment building and the town's own municipal building were hit by the strikes. A number of residents interviewed by Human Rights Watch either stated that Tigayan forces had either left before it occurred, or at the very least, "did not see militia forces present." Mulu Nega Kahsay (born 15 November 1967) is an Ethiopian academic and politician. Mulu Nega was one of the federal Ethiopian State Ministers of Science and Education in 2020. In November 2020 during the Tigray conflict, the House of Federation appointed Mulu Nega to replace Debretsion Gebremichael, chief executive of Tigray Region, with Mulu Nega becoming chief executive of the Transitional Government of Tigray.
