"Así es la Vida" ("That's Life") is a song performed by Nicaraguan salsa singer Luis Enrique on his 1994 self-titled studio album of the same name. It was written by Omar Alfanno and released as the second single from the album. Lyrically, the song takes on a "humanistic tale". Its music video was filmed in Miami Beach and was nominated for Video of the Year at the 1995 Lo Nuestro Awards. Luis Enrique Mejía López (born September 28, 1962) is a Nicaraguan singer-songwriter. He is known as "El Príncipe de la Salsa" (''The Prince of Salsa''). He achieved widespread success with the single " Yo No Sé Mañana". Early life and education He attended La Serna High School in Whittier, California. Career He started his career in the late 1980s and achieved success in the 1990s. He was one of the leading pioneers that led to the salsa romántica movement in the 1980s. Enrique has received two Grammy Award-nomination for " Best Tropical Latin Performance" for album ''Luces del Alma'' and his song "Amiga". He performed and recorded with salsa romántica group Sensation 85, which also included La Palabra and Nestor Torres. The 7th Lo Nuestro Awards ceremony, presented by the Univision, honored the best Latin music of 1994 and 1995 and took place on May 18, 1995, at a live presentation held in Miami, Florida. The ceremony was broadcast in the United States and Latin America by Univision. During the ceremony, nineteen categories were presented. In October 1994, ''Billboard'' magazine established Tropical Airplay, a chart that ranks the top-performing songs played on tropical radio stations in the United States based on weekly airplay data compiled by Nielsen's Broadcast Data Systems (BDS). It is a subchart of Hot Latin Songs, which lists the best-performing Spanish-language songs in the country. According to an 1985 article by ''Billboard'', tropical music is the "sound of the Spanish-speaking Caribbean – though it extends beyond it". It usually encompasses dance genres such as salsa, merengue, bachata, vallenato, and the Colombian cumbia and tropical music in Mexico. Five songs topped the chart in 1994 and 12 tracks did the same in 1995. Until November 5, 1994, BDS ran test charts which only listed the number one song of the week on ''Billboard''s electronic database. The Lo Nuestro Award for Video of the Year is an honor presented annually by American television network Univision at the Lo Nuestro Awards. The accolade was established to recognize the most talented performers of Latin music. Salsa music is a style of Latin American music. Because most of the basic musical components predate the labeling of salsa, there have been many controversies regarding its origin. Most songs considered as salsa are primarily based on son montuno, with elements of Mambo (music), mambo, Latin jazz, Bomba (Puerto Rico), bomba, plena and guaracha. All of these elements are adapted to fit the basic son montuno template when performed within the context of salsa. Originally the name salsa was used to label commercially several styles of Latin dance music, but nowadays it is considered a musical style on its own and one of the staples of Latin American culture.
