Astra Blair (born 2 September 1932) is a British former opera singer, agent, and charity fundraiser. Life and career Blair was born Margaret Jean Waugh in India and educated in England and West Africa. After finishing school Blair took up a scholarship at The Royal Academy of Music with singing as her principal study. Her professional debut was as a mezzo-soprano with Glyndebourne Festival Opera; she later joined the Sadlers Wells Opera, which became the English National Opera. In 1954 she married the opera singer Raimund Herincx and had three children. In 1972 she established Music and Musicians Artists' Management, an operatic and concert agency in London. Astra Clément-Bayard
Astra Clément-Bayard was a French manufacturer of dirigibles. In 1908 the French industrialist Adolphe Clément-Bayard, who had already made a fortune manufacturing cars, motorcycles and bicycles, diversified into the aviation industry. His first project was a lens-shaped airship designed by Louis Capazza, which was never built. He then collaborated with the Société Astra (Société Astra des Constructions Aéronautiques) on the manufacture of a more conventional craft. Astra were responsible for the manufacture of the envelope, and Clement-Bayard took responsibility for the nacelle and engine. After this collaborative effort the company started manufacturing the envelopes as well, at a new factory in La Motte-Breuil built in anticipation of orders from the French Army, who had decided to commence airship operations. Biography Early years Astra Desmond was born Gwendoline Mary Thomson (she would later modify the spelling of her first name to Gwendolyn), in Torquay, England, the daughter of George Thomson, a Melbourne-born Australian dentist, and Viva Louisa (nee Blain), a London-born British schoolteacher and suffragist. Astra Rosetta Edwards-Bennett () is a Trinidadian table tennis player. Born in Port of Spain, Edwards came to prominence in 1997, becoming the top junior female player in Trinidad and Tobago. That year she won the Silver Bowl, the National Junior Championship, and the Port of Spain Classified B Division. Gunārs Astra (22 October 1931 – 6 April 1988) was a Latvian human rights activist and anti-Soviet dissident arrested by the Soviet Union in 1961 and sentenced to prison for 15 years.
