Andrew Astbury
Andrew Astbury (born 29 November 1960) is an English former competitive swimmer who represented Great Britain at the Olympics and England in the Commonwealth Games in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Swimming career In his international swimming debut as an 18-year-old, Astbury represented England at the 1978 Commonwealth Games in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, where he received a bronze medal for this third-place finish in the men's 1500-metre freestyle. In the first of two consecutive Summer Olympics in which he appeared, Astbury swam for Great Britain at the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow. He was a member of the sixth-place British team in the men's 4x200-metre freestyle relay. In individual competition, he also competed in the preliminary heats of the 400 and 1500-metre freestyle events. Ian Astbury
Ian Robert Astbury (born 14 May 1962) is an English singer, best known as a founding member, lead vocalist and frontman of the rock band the Cult. During various hiatuses from the Cult, Astbury has fronted the short-lived Holy Barbarians in 1996, and later from 2002 to 2007 served as the lead singer of Riders on the Storm, a Doors tribute band that also featured Ray Manzarek and Robby Krieger from the original Doors. He replaced Rob Tyner during an MC5 reunion in 2003, as well as appearing on several one-off guest vocal performances on other artist's songs. Early life Ian Astbury was born in Heswall, Cheshire, and is of Scottish and English descent. He moved with his family to Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, from England in 1973 when he was 11. Biography Astbury was deputy director of the Key Centre for Women's Health in Society, a World Health Organisation centre. She left this position to join Victoria University in Melbourne, Australia, as research professor in psychology. William Astbury
William Thomas Astbury Fellow of the Royal Society, FRS (25 February 1898 – 4 June 1961) was an English physicist and molecular biology, molecular biologist who made pioneering X-ray crystallography, X-ray diffraction studies of biomolecule, biological molecules. His work on keratin provided the foundation for Linus Pauling's discovery of the alpha helix. He also studied the structure for DNA in 1937 and made the first step in the elucidation of nucleic acid double helix, its structure. Early life Astbury was the fourth child of seven, born in Longton, Stoke-on-Trent. His father, William Edwin Astbury, was a pottery, potter and provided comfortably for his family. David Astbury
David Keith Astbury (born 26 February 1991) is a former Australian rules footballer who played in three premierships over a 12-year career with the Richmond Football Club in the Australian Football League (AFL). Astbury was drafted by Richmond with the 35th pick overall in the 2009 national draft and made his debut in round 4 of the 2010 season. After an injury-affected start to his career that included just 24 AFL matches in his first five seasons, Astbury settled into a fullback and centre-half back role by 2016 and was a regular member of the club's senior side. He was a member of Richmond's three premiership sides in 2017, 2019 and 2020, and retired following the 2021 season having played 155 senior matches.
