Music was ubiquitous throughout Mesopotamian history, playing important roles in both religious and secular contexts. Mesopotamia is of particular interest to scholars because evidence from the region—which includes artifacts, artistic depictions and written records—places it among the earliest well-documented cultures in the history of music. The discovery of a bone wind instrument dating to the 5th millennium BCE provides the earliest evidence of music culture in Mesopotamia; depictions of music and musicians appear in the 4th millennium BCE; and later, in the city of Uruk, the pictograms for ‘harp’ and ‘musician’ are present among the earliest known examples of writing. Music played a central role in Mesopotamian religion and some instruments themselves were regarded as minor deities and given proper names, such as the Ninigizibara. Assyrian folk/pop music, also known as Assyrian folk-pop or modern Syriac music ( syr, ܡܘܣܝܩܝ ܣܦܝܢܘܬܐ ܐܬܘܪܝܬܐ/ܣܘܪܝܝܬܐ), is the musical style of the Assyrian people derived from traditional music that includes a broad range of stylistic varieties, which would also encompass fusions of Western genres such as pop, electronic, Latin, jazz and/or classical music, with a melodic basis of Assyrian folk. Background Assyrian folk music claims to be the descendant of the music of their ancient Upper Mesopotamian ancestors that has survived in the liturgical music of the Syriac Churches. Assyrian songs are generally sung in Iraqi Koine, a standard variety of Assyrian Neo-Aramaic. However, older songs mostly had an Urmian dialect and tribal-folk music tend to contain Tyari dialects. Syriac Sacral Music
Syriac sacral music is music in the Syriac language as used in the liturgy of Syriac Christianity. Historically it is best known from and important for its part in the development of Christian sacred music since Antiquity. The Syriac churches have a musical system based on ancient principles today known as ''maqam'', there are eight maqams used in the church and these are known as qadmoyo ( maqam bayati, maqam ussak), (maqam huseini), tlithoyo (maqam segah, maqam nahawand, maqam kurd), rbi'oyo ( maqam rast), hmishoyo ( maqam huzam), shtithoyo ( maqam ajam), shbi'oyo (maqam saba) and tminoyo ( maqam hijaz) (in order from one to eight). The most predominant works of the Syriac Church's music was collected in an anthology named ''Beth Gazo'' (''Psalms of the Treasury of Maqams'').
