The Associative Movement of Italians Abroad ( it, Movimento Associativo Italiani all'Estero, MAIE) is an Italian political party representing Italians abroad. Based in Argentina and active mainly in South America, the MAIE is a centrist party. History The party emerged from the split of the liberal wing of the Italian Associations in South America (AISA) in 2008. In the 2008 general election the MAIE won one seat in the Chamber of Deputies for Ricardo Antonio Merlo, elected to the Chamber for AISA in 2006, and one seat in the Senate for Mirella Giai, a former member and candidate of the Democrats of the Left (DS). Both Merlo and Giai joined forces with centrist and centre-right groups, notably including the Liberal Democrats (LD), with whom the MAIE formed a joint electoral list for the 2009 European Parliament election, and the Union of the Centre (UdC). Ricardo Antonio Merlo (born 25 May 1962 in Buenos Aires) is an Italian politician, leader of the Associative Movement Italians Abroad. Born and resident in Argentina, he acquired Italian citizenship through Jus sanguinis. Biography Graduated in Political Science at the University of Salvador in Buenos Aires, Ricardo Antonio Merlo completed his studies in Italy at the University of Padua. Between 1998 and 2003, he was elected member of the General Council of Italians Abroad in Buenos Aires and then, in 2004, he was elected president of COMITES in Buenos Aires. In 2005, he served as president of the Intercomites Argentina. In the Italian general election of 2006 he was elected deputy for the first time in the foreign constituency of the Chamber with the Italian Associations in South America (AISA), a political movement founded by Luigi Pallaro in 2005. The Union of the Centre ( it, Unione di Centro, UdC), whose complete name is "Union of Christian and Centre Democrats" (''Unione dei Democratici Cristiani e Democratici di Centro'', UDC), is a Christian-democratic political party in Italy. Lorenzo Cesa is the party's current secretary; Pier Ferdinando Casini was for years the most recognisable figure and ''de facto'' leader of the party, before eventually distancing from it in 2016. I Change (''Io Cambio'', IC) is a political party in Italy. History The party was formed in 2013 by Angelo Alessandri, former federal president of LN, national secretary of Lega Nord Emilia and member of the Chamber of Deputies, who had not supported the party's new course under Roberto Maroni. He was joined by other dissatisfied Lega members, like Claudio Morganti, MEP and former national secretary of Lega Nord Toscana, and Rosario Polizzi, a former deputy for National Alliance who had later joined I the South. 2014 European Parliament Election In Italy
The 2014 European Parliament election in Italy took place on 25 May 2014. Italy elected 73 MEPs out of 751 European Parliament seats. The governing Democratic Party (PD) won the election with 40.8% of the vote and 31 seats, followed by the Five Star Movement (21.2% and 17 seats) and Forza Italia (16.8% and 13 seats). As a result, the PD was the second largest national party in the European Parliament by number of seats after the German CDU/CSU and the largest among the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats. The PD's score was also the best result for an Italian party in a nationwide election since the 1958 general election, when the Christian Democracy won 42.4% of the vote. The Liberal Popular Alliance, whose full name was Liberal Popular Alliance – Autonomies ( it, Alleanza Liberalpopolare – Autonomie, ALA), was a centrist and liberal political party in Italy. ALA members were known as ''Verdiniani'', from the name of their leader Denis Verdini, who was formerly a long-time member and national coordinator of three successive centre-right parties led by Silvio Berlusconi (Forza Italia, The People of Freedom and again Forza Italia) until July 2015, when he broke with Berlusconi in order to support the government led by Matteo Renzi, leader of the centre-left Democratic Party. The party, which was described in its manifesto as "democratic, liberal, popular" as opposed both to " right-wing populism" and the " social-democratic left", described as "an experience with high and memorable value, yet by now run out", was launched on 11 November 2009 by Francesco Rutelli, senator for the Democratic Party (PD) and former leader of Democracy is Freedom – The Daisy (DL). The South American Union of Italian Emigrants ( it, Unione Sudamericana Emigrati Italiani, USEI) is an Italian political party representing Italian minorities in South America, especially Argentina and Brazil.
