Ivory Coast, also known as Côte d'Ivoire, officially the Republic of Côte d'Ivoire, is a country on the southern coast of West Africa. Its capital is Yamoussoukro, in the centre of the country, while its largest city and economic centre is the port city of Abidjan. Marie-Thérèse Houphouët-Boigny
Marie-Thérèse Houphouët-Boigny (born 17 September 1930) is the former First Lady of Ivory Coast. Her husband was Félix Houphouët-Boigny, the first President of Ivory Coast from 1962 to 1993. She was born Marie-Thérèse Brou in 1930 in a suburb of Abidjan, Ivory Coast, French West Africa. She was one of her parents' six children. When Brou was 16 years old, she and nineteen other Ivorian girls were chosen to attend private school in France. While living in France, she met and married her husband, Félix Houphouët-Boigny, when she was 21 years old. Houphouët-Boigny was more than 25 years older than her. Houphouët-Boigny caught the eye of the media during 1962 visit to the Kennedy White House, and was dubbed "Africa's Jackie" or 'Black Jackie Kennedy" by the media. In 1987, Houphouët-Boigny founded the N'Daya International Foundation, dedicated to improving the health, welfare, and education of children in Africa. Jeanne Gervais
Jeanne Gervais, ''née'' Jeanne Ahou Siefer-N’Dri (June 6, 1922 – December 9, 2012) was an Ivorian politician and the first woman minister in Côte d'Ivoire. Born in Grand-Bassam, Gervais was the daughter of a French father and a Baoulé mother. A longtime member of the Democratic Party of Côte d'Ivoire – African Democratic Rally, she participated in the women's march in her hometown in 1949. Trained as a teacher at the École normal de Rufisque, she became one of three women, alongside Hortense Aka-Anghui and Gladys Anoma, elected to the National Assembly immediately after independence. She served in that body from 1965 until 1980. In 1976, she was named head of the Ministry of Women's Affairs, remaining in that role until 1984 and becoming the first woman to serve in the Ivorian cabinet. Gladys Anoma
Gladys Anoma (1930 – October 26, 2006) was a scientist, professor and politician from the Ivory Coast in West Africa. Life Anoma was born the daughter of Joseph Anoma, and while she later became known as Gladys Anoma, she was given the name Bonful Gladys Rose Anoma at birth. She was a student in Senegal for four years and in France for two years. She earned her doctorate in tropical botany from the Sorbonne, in Paris, France, and she also visited Tunisia, Germany, England, Ethiopia, Morocco and Ghana before she reached 37 years of age. According to her obituary, she was married to HE Ambassador J. Georges Anoma. She also had a sister named Mrs. Aké. A newspaper report about a five-week trip she made to Kingston, New York in August 1968, with 11 other African women leaders, states that her husband was, at that time, Secretary General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and that the couple had four children. Martine Djibo
Martine Aya Djibo (died 30 October 2022) was an Ivorian educator and politician who served in the National Assembly from 1975 until 1980 and from 1990 until 2010. Although initially a member of the PDCI-RDA party, she defected in 2004 and founded the Party for the Unity of the Republic of Côte d'Ivoire, citing frustrations with the party amid the First Ivorian Civil War. Career Djibo began her teaching career in the central city of Bouaké. After initially teaching Spanish at Martin Luther King College and CEG Koko, she later became the director of the Modern College for Young Girls.
