The Association of British Muslims (AoBM) is an organisation of British Muslims, initially founded in 1889 by Shaykh Abdullah Quilliam. History The Association of British Muslims began in Liverpool, England as the ''English Islamic Association'', founded by Abdullah Quilliam, a 19th-century convert to Islam who opened one of England's first mosques during the same year, at about the same time that the Shah Jahan Mosque was built. AoBM changed their name to the ''British Muslim Society'' in 1914 and to the ''Western Islamic Association'' in 1924. It declined in the late 1940s, was opposed by nationality-based organisations of British Muslims in 1969, and became the ''Association of British Muslims'' in 1975. The name ''Association for British Muslims'' was also used for sometime after 1978. Abdullah Quilliam
William Henry Quilliam (10 April 1856 – 23 April 1932), who changed his name to Abdullah Quilliam and later Henri Marcel Leon or Haroun Mustapha Leon, was a 19th-century convert from Christianity to Islam, noted for founding England's first mosque and Islamic centre. Early life William Henry Quilliam was born at 22 Eliot Street, Liverpool, on 10 April 1856, to a wealthy local family. He spent most of his childhood on the Isle of Man and was brought up as a Methodist. He was educated at the Liverpool Institute and the Manx King William's College. He became a solicitor in 1878, specialising in criminal law, and practising at 28 Church Street, Liverpool. He defended suspects in many high-profile murder cases. In 1879, he married Hannah Johnstone. At this time, Quilliam was a Wesleyan Methodist and a proponent of the temperance movement. The ''Pink Paper'' was a UK publication covering gay and lesbian issues published by Millivres Prowler Limited. Founded in 1987 as a newspaper, it switched to internet-only publication in June 2009. The decision to go online-only was announced in June 2009 and attributed to economic conditions, and at the time management said a printed version might reappear in the future. A decision to close the website – again citing poor economic conditions – was taken in June 2012, with the site finally being shuttered in September 2012. The brand and assets remain in the ownership of Millivres Prowler. As a tabloid newspaper, it had a circulation in the tens of thousands across Britain. Hamza Kashgari Mohamad Najeeb (often Hamza Kashgari, ar, حمزة كاشغري; born 1989) is a Saudi poet and a former columnist for the Saudi daily newspaper '' Al-Bilad''. In 2011, he was on a Mabahith watchlist of pro-democracy activists. Kashgari became the subject of a controversy after he was accused of insulting the Islamic prophet Muhammad in three short messages published through the Twitter social networking service. LGBT Humanists UK, founded in 1979, is a special interest section of Humanists UK which campaigns for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) equality and human rights in the United Kingdom.
